His eyes never truly left the Queen.
Balthazar continued to watch her for quite some time; through all her endeavors and her meeting of the heroes. He had imagined to end their life prior to Midna's meddling, but was not given the proper chance. Instead, to his surprise, she left them in order to obtain her own footing in the realm of light, and offered him the oppourtunity to do as he intended. Foolish Woman.
It took more than a fortnight, but Balthazar was able to obtain robes similar to that which he was accustomed to, along with two scimitar he favored more than the broadsword. His plan? To strike down the hero as he slept. If his intel was correct, the hylian male already reforged the master sword, and would be no match in a duel of chivalry. His removal would make Zelda's dispatching far easier, making his success inevitable.
Posing as a guard for days, Bal procured schedules, sleeping arrangements, knowledge of the castle ruin layout, and other necessary information for Link's assassination. All the while, the mastermind smiled at the thought of reuniting with Midna for her descent into darkness. He would have what was his; justice and power. No longer would he be seen as vermin. After centuries, his capabilities would be recognized.
Slowed breathing, light footsteps, and the mask of rain. Balthazar entered his chamber, --all light absent from the dark and dreary room. His eyes glowed in the night as he crept closer, a glint of moonlight glimmering from his blade as he pulled it from his sheath. In one fell swoop, Balthazar would end his life, and flee into the protection of the shadows.

Nights were always the worst for Link. It was too familiar to his own personal hell, the torture he had to endure for years coming back to him in the shroud of night. Having Zelda close had helped, but there were nights she couldn't be there. Though most nights he slept lightly, this was the night that the Master Sword was reforged, and his muscles and mind ached with exhaustion. He slept soundly, but in rough dreams, and the sword sat upon a nearby table, unsheathed.
But even the dark memories of his torture could stop the voice of the sword in his head.
Master, there is an intruder! Act swiftly!
Instinct snapped in as his eyes opened from deep sleep, confused but alert, and he took the split second to register the figure moving towards him as the only pause he had. It was almost second nature to grasp the wooden hilt of the hunting knife under his pillow, and he sat up. The motion unsheathed the blade, and in the little moonlight in the room, it glinted as it pointed at the intruder. The glow of the sword faded, and the last thing before near darkness hit again was Link's eyes narrowing.

Where he expected to feel the sensation of metal cutting flesh, his body instead jerked back from the swift movement of his target. In the Hylian's hand was a well worn knife, which must have belonged to him for quite some time if he felt safe to keep it under his pillow.
The twili straightened his posture, removing the mask from his face so that he may speak in return. Not all assassin's would talk to their prey, but Balthazar was different. His worst idiosyncrasy involved engaging in conversation despite facing danger.
"I come of my own regards Hero," he said, practically spitting out the last word, "I am no more than a shadow, --but you stand in my way and I come to remove the obstruction." Bal said before taking his stance and rolling his scimitar in the palm of his hand.
Putting chivalry aside, the assassin attacked before Link could grab his bearings. Balthazar advanced, his right foot stepping forward while bringing his blade down in a diagonal motion.
