Give me the simple life[attr=class,bulk]
Maude Lif could be considered a somewhat serious person. In general, she took things are face value. She did not often implore hyperbole, metaphor, sarcasm, or humor. In fact, she often had trouble disciphering such things. It was evident to even the unspotted street rat, that she was stern, in not severe woman and she ought not to be trifled with. But in this instance, Maude simply had to laugh! Laughter was, of course, a fairly common sight for most people and it wasn't as if Maude knew no happiness. Her fiance had quite a knack for making her laugh actually. As did her family at times, but even then she did more soft chuckles and chortling. This was a sudden, rapturous laughter, one that likely scared even her daughter next to her. It was like it was the first time someone told her a joke that she actually got. She truly understood the absurdity of it this time! It seems unnatural in a way. People have think that Maude had finally gotten too angry and fucking lost it. She nudged Farrah, trying to share her delight. Although there was a very strong likelihood that Farrah hadn't ever paid close enough attention to Maude's talk about growing plants to get what exactly was going on.
[break][break]
It took her a moment to catch her breath, but when she did, she folded her arms over her chest with as smug of an expression as the affectless woman would present. "A crop three times as big in one year?" she confirmed. It hadn't occurred to her that Pan might have been trying to start the bidding low her or that the joke might be intentional, which was good because that surely did not seem to be the case. "Alright, Panthus and since you are so knowledgeable on cultivation techniques, what method do you suggest for that?" Growing healthy plants that produce good, sellable goods was already a difficult task, but growing giant vegetables, like one might see in a contest at a fair, was entirely different and that seemed to be what Pan had in mind. Maintaining fields meant spreading time and energy out over a number of plants usually between different species and areas for the sake of rotation and soil care. Some of those grow well, some don't. She could sell the best to individuals. She could sell the ugly but edible to businesses like restaurants who bought in bulk. And she could throw the worst away while still making a profit. Producing such large giants as Pan wanted put the focus on an individual plant. It would involve a specifically tilled patch a soil, separate from all other plants. She'd have to put her best resources into it's growth. She'd have to prune most of the flowers and buds so that only the best 2, maybe 3 if she'd lucky, would get those resources. Even then, it would need constant attention. Not to mention that large vegetables were prone to rot and pests since they were heavily stuck in the same place on the ground for so long. She'd probably have to put something under it in hopes of keeping it healthy and all this just in the hopes that one of those potential buds develops into something sizable. There was a lot she could do to encourage growth, but she wasn't a god. She couldn't just will the plant to make pumpkins except bigger. Modern day farmers often have access to different species of vegetables that typically bigger or smaller depending and those seeds already had a lot of development behind then to encourage such production. Maude did not have such technologies. She couldn't just go to the store and purchase atlantic giant pumpkin seeds. She had only local species to select from and her own selective breeding. How would she even transport such a vegetable? Did even consider how big "three times" actually was? He was asking for at least a 60 pound produce here. That may not seem like a lot, but just lifting it would be a two-person pain. Pumpkins didn't come with grips after all.
[break][break]
None of that was to say that Maude couldn't accomplish it. She could certainly grow a considerable vegetable if she put all her experience towards it. It may not be an additional 40 pounds in one year, but it would be a impressive size she though, partially out of ego. But she could also simple attend to her farm as she normally did. The offer was only for 100 rupees. That wasn't really a lot of money. She was running a profitable business here. She could also just sell 20 of her shittier stock for that price. That opportunity cost simply didn't add up. 100 rupees was not going to make or break her in any regard. Of course, that was all probably a lot more thought than Panos had put into this. If he had approached her more openly, perhaps bring up the problem and letting the expert advice, then she might be inclined to help. But he suggestion simply sounded as if he were requesting she simply grow it bigger with no consideration into the time, effort, and resources it would take to deliver such a product. It was definitely not the first time a customer of some kind at instructed a tradesman to just "do it better." He had been trying to stoke her ego, but it failed on the principal that his pitch was too childish to entertain. All he'd done was ruin his credibility before it could be established. For all his jewelry, 100 rupees was not enough flaunted money to catch her attention. She simply did not any reason consider his proposal. She was a farmer, not a commissioned artist, not that Maude probably knew what a commission was.
[break][break]
Similarly, she figured Pan wouldn't know why she was mocking him either. She uncrossed her arms, leaning against the counter and she tried to clarify, "A produce like that would take a lot of time and effort to grow and there's no certainly it would come up to your specifications. It's not impossible, but I'm also not interested." She spoke with bored apathy and sounded somewhat condescending towards the ignorance merchant. She gestured to the vegetables around her. he stall was still fairly empty, since Maude had already sold a majority of her stock, so while she was still trying to make a sale, she wasn't hurting for it either"I think that whoever it is your shopping for would be just fine with what you see available to you." Unbeknownst to Maude, Pan was trying to use her pumpkins to potentially buy off his cousin, Nex. Had she been aware, she would have made the same suggestion."
