Séala
Wisdom
Water Sage
TITLE/NICKNAME: Water Sage, though at the start of RP she does not know it
RACE: Zora
AGE: 16
GENDER: Female
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION: Despite her importance to Hyrule and the fate of Link and Princess Zelda, Séale has a rather introverted personality. Shy and demure, the young Zora has been conditioned to keep her thoughts and feelings to herself, stay out of the attention of others, and remain as nothing more than a shadow to the Princess of the Zoras.
Séale is the princess's handmaiden, and though her rights as an individual have been stripped away from her, she finds herself very fortunate to be so close to the royal family. The princess is her best friend, even if they live completely different lives separated by class and status. Séale does not mind, if anything it's a way to vicariously live her life as a princess herself. She tries not to let it get to her head, though. It would not do to let her imagination run away from her. Séale can't have too many dreams; she's just a simple handmaiden, after all.
Still, she loves listening to ancient stories and legends of yore and secretly wishes she could cast aside her servile chains and live a life of adventure and purpose. A purpose greater than serving the royal family, where she could be her own Zora, live her own life, and maybe ... though it might be a stretch ... find love.
She does not know her parents, nor does she believe she ever will. Her name, Séale, is the only thing they were able to gift her, the only link outside a life tied to the royal family. Named after an ancient mythical creature, legend states that the séale was stolen away from the sea. Until the séale finds her coat, she is forced to remain on land, living with a family that is not truly hers. Séale knows the legend, and wonders if she might ever find her own lost coat.
This innate desire for individuality has always resided in Séale, but it has not been until recent times that it truly started to manifest. Through a deep forgotten connection to Princess Ruto, Séale is beginning to find a sense of stubbornness blooming inside her. She finds herself disagreeing more often, frowning upon decisions she would not make or approve of. It's in stark contrast from her usual quiet self. As a handmaiden, Séale is not supposed to have opinions. Finding that she does, and that they conflict with her duties as a royal handmaiden, has put her in a position of doubt and uncertainty.
LIKES:
- The Zora Princess: Being the handmaiden to the Zora Princess naturally gives Séale an affinity for her. Without other children to play or interact with, she is Séale's only friend. Séale would do absolutely anything for her; she would steal, she would kill, she would die for her. It is a blind sense of loyalty that holds no bounds.
- Stories: A closet romantic, Séale loves the stories of yore, finding them beautiful. Often, she imagines herself living these tales, as the Hero of Time, the resourceful Zelda, but never the evil Ganondorf. She would love nothing more than to go on an adventure, but adventures are not for handmaidens. So she will do the next best thing and support her friend, the Princess of the Zoras, when the time comes for the princess to awaken as the Sage of Water.
- Her Name: Séale finds her name to be pretty and meaningful, and in her budding sense of individuality, it is a rock on which she has begun to cling to. She knows she was taken from her family by fate, and though she fears she may never know who they are, she knows they have always cared for her and are waiting for the time for her to return to them.
DISLIKES:
- Evil: Though it's a rather general term, Séale has listened to enough stories to know what is good and what is evil. She sides with Link and Zelda and the Heroes of Light, and she would never allow herself to succumb to darkness. It pleases her that the Zoras have always supported the Royal Family, and have never aided Ganondorf in his evil schemes.
- Politics: Politics, in Séale's mind, is just a specific genre of evil. Being so close to the princess and royal Zora family, it is inevitable that Séale has been subjected to political talks. They bore her and aggravate her, especially when decisions are made that benefit one party at the expense of another. What is so hard about reaching a compromise that makes everybody happy?
- Her Internal Conflict: All Séale's life, she has been taught not to be seen and not to be heard, and she was fine with that. Happy, even. So why now does she want to break these chains? Why does she suddenly disagree with decisions when she never had before? Why is she actively trying to influence outcomes when she never cared to? It goes against everything she was brought up to be, and the only answer as to why is because she is unhappy. Séale had never believed herself to be unhappy, and the realization that she might be is nothing short of distressing.
MOTIVATIONS:
- Protect and Serve the Princess: As the chosen handmaiden, Séale's primary concern is protection and service to the Zora Princess. The princess is her best friend, and she would go to the ends of Hyrule for her. Séale believes that it is only a matter of time before the princess awakens as the Water Sage, and she means to do everything in her power to prepare her friend for the role.
- Explore Her Individuality: Taught since birth to remain in the background, Séale had always accepted her role as a shadow, to remain out of sight and out of mind as the princess goes about her royal duties. Now, though, a budding sense of individuality has begun to surface within her. Knowing that she is not supposed to be anything more than a loyal servant, Séale's exploration of this new self is akin to a guilty pleasure. Who is this Zora trying to break free inside of her? Séale has realized she never quite knew who she herself was, but maybe now she can.
- Keep Her Individuality but Remain Loyal to the Princess: An impossible feat, Séale is sure. As a servant, Séale is not supposed to have an identity. She is there to support the princess and royal family in all that they do, not to question their motives or disagree with their decisions. To do so would be a sure way to be dismissed, or worse, banished from the domain. Yet Séale no longer wishes to deny who she is. It is difficult to juggle being a servant and wanting more, but Séale will do the best she can, and pray she does not carelessly step out of line.
FEARS:
- Harm to the Princess: The Zora Princess is Séale's life. Without her, Séale serves no purpose. If anything bad befell her, Séale would not know what to do. It is part why she is afraid her friend will awaken as the Water Sage, though her romanticism and adventurous side would like nothing better.
- Losing a Part of Herself: All her life Séale has known herself as nothing more than the handmaiden to the Princess of the Zoras, but now a sense of individuality is surfacing inside her. Séale knows it is a part of her, and the last thing she would want is to lose it. She needs to be careful not to overstep her boundaries as a simple servant, yet retain this part of her that seems in such direct opposition of it.
- Being Banished: Should she speak out of line or anger the royal family in any way, Séale is sure they would dismiss her without a second thought. The royal family has been her entire life. They are her family. She doesn't know anything else. If she were cast out, Séale wouldn't know what to do, how to fend for herself, how to find food and shelter. Séale would not be able to survive on her own.
HISTORY: Not much is known about Zora history, living life away from the mainland and isolated in their own little domain within the sea. What has been known in the 400 years since the events of Twilight Princess is that when the waters surrounding the mainland had become too wild and dangerous for travel, the Zora Royal Family was deposed, the Zora people claiming they had lost their divine connection with the Goddesses and thus brought upon this misfortune themselves. Banished from their domain, the royal family and a few loyal followers sought to regain favor with the goddesses by facing the stormy waters head on.
No one returned.
Zora's Domain was left in a state of turmoil. With the royal family exiled by its own people, there was no one left to rule or guide the Zoras and their waters. A few prominent families rose to combat for the throne, until eventually it was claimed and a new royal family established.
Séale's story begins with her birth. It had always been tradition in the Zora Royal Family to select a handmaiden to the newly anointed princess, and it was always the next female born, so that the handmaiden could not use her age as an advantage or influence. Born a few months after the birth of the princess, Séale was chosen to fill this role. Taken away from her parents and family, she was brought up in the royal household, taught to tend to the princess and care for her as any loyal servant would.
Living in such close proximity but leading two very different lives, Séale and the Zora Princess stillgrew to be fast friends, nearly inseparable unless it was necessary for diplomatic reasons. Séale accepted her lot in life. It had been ingrained in her that she was so fortunate to have been chosen, that she would never need to worry about living her life as a commoner and that all her needs would always be taken care of, that she had no reason not to accept it.
In her early years she never had to think much about her true family. The royal family was hers, even if she happened to be a simple servant. She enjoyed playing with the princess, making her fins pretty and doing her make-up so that she was presentable to the Domain. She liked hearing the gossip and the stories, especially the stories, so much that she would often lose herself in them. When asked if she ever found them fascinating, if she ever might want to go on an adventure like Link or Zelda or Princess Ruto, Séale would always blush and shake a bashful head. They were just fun to listen to, she would say. She could never go on such wild adventures. It was much too dangerous, and she would much rather stay by her princess's side. This seemed to satisfy the storyteller, who was beginning to suspect Séale's attention was a little too invested in fantasies.
It was a secret life she led, envisioning herself going off on grand quests, saving the realm with a wonderful magical sword or artifact, and providing hope and light in such dark times. Her dreams were even as simple as reuniting with the family who were forced to give her up, her only connection to them being the name they gifted her before she was taken away. Handmaidens were not allowed such wild fancies, but still, Séale entertained them privately, where no one, not even the princess, knew her deepest desires.
As Séale grew up her imagination grew with her, and she began finding herself abandoning the naïve handmaiden who would follow her princess and the royal family blindly. She sometimes said so, a disagreement here, a look of disapproval there, which always resulted in a proper beating until Séale remembered her place. She was not to have an opinion, she was not to challenge the royal family in any way, shape, or form. Yet she did, or wanted to. It was difficult, but Séale had to relearn how to keep her mouth shut on certain issues, until once again she was the perfect handmaiden. She was just no longer happy about it.
Now that the Triforce has been split into a thousand shards, Séale is beginning to hear things. A faint whisper, the pluck of a harp's strings. When she turns her head, nothing is there and the noise disappears. She has not told anyone of this, and it unnerves her. She wonders if she's starting to go mad suppressing a piece of herself that simmers beneath the surface. For now, she tells herself to ignore such things, to pay them no heed. She's stronger than that. And sometimes it works.
But not always.
APPEARANCE
HEIGHT: 5'3"
WEIGHT: 109lbs
APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION: Not much is known about Séale's family as she was stripped away from them at birth, but what is clear and apparent is that she comes from an old and pure bloodline. Lacking the more human qualities of the newer Zora families, Séale is still mostly aquatic in appearance, with grayish blue skin accented with dark blue splotches, deep dark eyes that lack whites and pupils, long fins that protrude from her arms, and a porpoise-like tail that is attached to the back of her head.
With the more humanoid appearance the Zoras have adapted as of late, clothing is more prominent in their society, but Séale's more ethnic appearance allows her to get away with less. As a matter of fact, she is encouraged to wear as little clothing as possible in the tradition of ancient Zoras. A simple halter top and two long flowing veils are all she wears, both a maroon color to accentuate her skin.
Taught to keep out of sight and always defer to others, Séale is most often seen with her head down, avoiding one's eyes. Her hands are always crossed in front of her body, in part to keep herself as small as possible, and in part to close herself off if anyone deigns to give her attention. Occasionally she will look up if something catches her interest, but she is always quick to remember her place and drop her gaze.
She rarely smiles unless she is in the company of her princess, again, a way to act demure and shy away from unwanted attention. With the way she holds herself, always standing off to the side and waiting until she is spoken to before she speaks, one might think she is simply timid, which is not entirely untrue. A tongue too loose can cause trouble for a handmaiden, but if one can manage to get into her comfort zone and allow her to open up naturally, they will find she can be quite passionate about certain things.
When she does smile, it's like sunbeams filtering through the water, a twinkle in her dark eyes that seem to shimmer. Her dorsal tail flips and twitches whenever she is excited, and when no one is watching, Séale likes to spin in the water.
