Marin Riya Hyrule
Wisdom
Heroes of Hyrule
TITLE/NICKNAME: Princess of Hyrule (Former?), Mari (Pronounced like Mary)
RACE: Hylian
AGE: 18
GENDER: Female
SEXUALITY: Lesbian
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION: Marin is somewhat quiet and reserved when left to her own devices, lacking both her older sister's ambition and her older sister's outspoken sense of justice, as well as some of her maturity. She holds herself in unusually low self-esteem for royalty, stemming from the loss of her home, her family (supposedly) and her status. This has inspired a sense of bitterness in Marin's heart that she rarely speaks of out of a well-deserved sense of fear that others would not be able to empathize with her situation. This bitterness has contributed greatly to Marin's distant disposition towards others. Naturally a clingy person, she now calls very few people her friend. These people, all two of them, are her older sister Zelda and the nursemaid that raised her as a child. Though she used to be on good turns with her older brother, they grew apart after Zelda's (supposed) death, the point in time at which Marin began withdrawing.
That aspect of Marin's personality aside, she actually enjoys being put in positions of authority or command, even if it's only over a single person. An excellent method of getting on her good side would be to ask her for simple advice, such as which way to turn at a fork in the road or how to feel about newfound knowledge. Marin spends a lot of the time she isn't speaking making observations about the world around her. She is a very perceptive woman that tends to pick up on the nuances in life. For example, she will usually be able to read someone's facial expressions very well and is often good at telling how others are feeling at a glance as a result.
Slow and methodical in her actions, Marin does not do well under pressure unless she is given or formulates a plan beforehand to help her deal with or prevent unexpected developments. A gentle person by nature, Marin lacks most of the fighting spirit required to wield your average physical weapon with lethal proficiency. She also does not handle pain with grace and is prone to crying when hurt or cowardice when threatened with immediate harm. Marin's true passion lays in the study of magic and the supernatural.
LIKES:
- Ghosts: Spirits and spirituality are a topic of interest for Marin. Specifically, it is the notion that one can gain information from beyond the grave that draws her to seek spirits out. She enjoys talking to them, trying to understand how they died, trying to aid them in moving on and generally trying to gain an understanding of undeath.
- Spicy Food: Marin has taken a liking to spicy foods, the closest thing to junk food she was allowed to have as a child. She has an unusual tolerance for spice as a result and seems to enjoy the burn. Her favorite food is a spicy beef curry.
- Music and Singing: The fine arts were simply a part of life back when she lived in the castle, a part of life she misses dearly. Simply humming Zelda's lullaby around her is enough to grab her attention and shift her mood.
- Exploring and Archaeology: Marin enjoys learning about the world outside the castle walls now that she's been forced to leave. You could say she enjoys playing detective, but also enjoys appreciating the world's natural beauty.
- Fashion: A bit of a girly girl, Marin's appearance is one of few things she still takes pride in. If she were to be allowed all the luxuries she could wish for, you might say she'd enjoy primping herself until she 'felt like a princess'.
- Seeking Zelda's Approval: Zelda is the princess Marin wishes she could be and is often a role model for her. In the absence of the royal nursemaid, Marin generally looks to Zelda for the support she needs.
- Wordplay: Marin's favorite form of verbal humor. She has a weak spot for puns, witty rhetoric, spoonerisms and double entendres.
- Romance, Magic and Mystery books: When Marin isn't studying magic, her book of choice often drifts to either a bad romance novel or a mystery novel to help her stimulate her mind.
DISLIKES:
- Being Judged: Marin tends not to respond positively when she feels like she's being judged. Often self-aware, she tends to abide by the notion that one cannot look like a food if they do not open their mouths, and will often respond to harsh criticism by falling silent and remaining that way until she feels secure again.
- Lechery: Marin may enjoy double entendres, but not of the crude varieties. She is easily freaked out by perverts and people who have the misfortune of being perceived as perverts, as well as vulgar humor. She sees herself as still being too young for such topics and has very mixed feelings about the prospect of finding love in general.
- Sugar: Marin doesn't enjoy sweet foods and drinks, as well as candy. A lifetime of healthier eating has left her unused to the taste it gives and many foods with sugar in them come off as 'sickeningly sweet' to her as a result.
- Exercise: Marin is, understandably given her upbringing, happiest being pampered. The more she's made to sweat, the less she enjoys herself.
- Ignorance: Marin was taught the importance of love in defining one's strength of character at a young age. She prefers talking about her problems as opposed to fighting over them and is usually quick to question other people's judgments. This is an ideal that she believes everyone would benefit from and she tends not to enjoy the company of those that frequently oppress and bully others.
- Corruption: Marin sees corruption, most especially corrupt authorities, as a betrayal of everything she chooses to remember her family standing for. There aren't too many ways of making her angry faster than introducing her to a lord that has forsaken his people.
MOTIVATIONS:
- Supporting Zelda: Marin still thinks of Zelda as a Queen and as the goddess reborn in spite of her severe downgrade in status and destruction of the triforce. She chooses to invest her hopes in her older sister, believing strongly that her wisdom is the key to making everything better. In that vein of thought, she sees supporting the Heroes of Hyrule as a holy endeavor.
- Bettering Herself: Marin hopes that through her efforts she can build a new life for herself that is as good as if not better than the life she lived back in the castle.
- Staving Off Depression: Marin still has some somewhat repressed feelings about her parents' death, Zelda's supposed death and their eviction from their kingdom. It would be accurate to say that many of the distractions she seeks out are an attempt to prevent herself from being left alone with her thoughts.
FEARS:
- Loss of loved ones: Marin already lost Zelda once. She doesn't want to feel the things she felt that day ever again, in spite of its seeming inevitability.
- Losing their heritage: Whether it be losing their physical kingdom or their identity, Marin dreads the day that she is the last person to call herself a member of the Hyrulian Royal Family.
- Being maimed: Marin is afraid of serious combat and only engages in it reluctantly in self-defense for the most part. The idea of being maimed either by a predatorial beast or a brutal opponent and spending the rest of her days crippled or worse terrifies Marin.
HISTORY: Marin does not remember her mother, with her earliest memories being her nursemaid aiding her in walking. Her early separation from her mother and the nursemaid's coddling aided in shaping her to become rather clingy as a child, never content to be left alone while she was awake. Growing up, the nursemaid attempted to teach her the ways of the Sheikah but found that Marin was a somewhat unwilling student. She was simply far too gentle spirited to be taught to defend herself at such an early age.
Instead, the sheikah chose to teach Marin about the wonders of magic. She grew up learning about magic as a tool, rather than a weapon. When her favorite toy was lost, they would attempt to divine its location. When she needed to get somewhere quickly, she would be warped. When she was hungry food was conjured. As Marin grew older, the nursemaid began to ease her into the idea of defending herself. The idea of stranger danger was implanted in her head and magic was then flaunted as a way could solve her problems without hurting people. Slowly she opened Marin to the idea of being willing to fight to protect herself, showing her how easy magic could make some tasks.
As a young adult, Marin enjoyed a cozy and somewhat pampered life, always being thought of as being somewhat childish for her age, both on account of her short stature and her clingy, somewhat dependent personality. She was considered too naive to learn about court life and was generally treated like a little kid up until Zelda's supposed death. This was the young princess' first true exposure to the loss of someone she'd grown quite attached to. This was the first time she consciously acknowledged evil as a concept first hand. Losing Zelda broke Marin's heart and sent her into a depression that never completely ended. She was unable to accept that her brother could simply replace Zelda as the heir to the kingdom, growing distant from her sibling and inadvertently taking her grief out on him.
Zelda's return marked a return to better mental health for Marin, even in the wake of a tragedy. Though their situation was grimmer than ever, this represented the power of hope to Marin. If Zelda, who had died, could miraculously show up to try and save them, maybe the destiny of the world and their kingdom wasn't as set in stone as she'd believed. When the royal family was ousted from Hyrule Castle, this time Marin was hot on Zelda's heels and eager to be a part of her efforts, not wishing to be left out of the loop like the last time.
APPEARANCE
HEIGHT: 4'10''
WEIGHT: 115 lbs
APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION:
Face: Icy blue eyes emblematic of the royal family sit above a soft, youthful face. Her eyebrows are neatly trimmed and her hair painstakingly groomed each morning to frame her head and make her ever so slightly chubby cheeks stand out a bit less. Her gaze is sharp, and although she doesn't make a habit of staring her piercing thoughtful gaze can sometimes feel as if it is looking straight into one's soul.
Body build: Marin is quite lithe and, although you'd be hard-pressed to know this on account of her always wearing a dress of some sort, she has a pear-shaped body. Fair skin and hands that don't look like they've worked a day's hard labor in their life are indications of her upbringing.
Clothing: Marin doesn't like pants, or form fitting clothes in general, on account of having sensitive skin that is easily irritated by friction. She can almost always be found wearing a dress of some sort, with her favorite being a summer dress. She views the summer dress as a combination of style and comfort fit for even the most sensible princess.
Cosmetics: Although it is difficult to be consistent in these trying times, Marin will enhance her natural beauty with the subtle application of mascara, eye shadow and a flavored lipstick given the opportunity. Her unique scent could be described as a subtle mix of honey and lilies.
