With peace only so recently restored, Vaida had taken extra shifts amongst the guards of Hyrule Castle Town to keep the peace and maintain some semblance of control over the precarious situation. She knew likely, that many of the public were still concerned and worried about outside threats, and the Sheikah's appearance was something she hoped eased those worries.
Her patrol kept her close to the castle entrance, she was still a royal attendant after all, though the Princess Esme was safe inside the castle with another guard. And so Vaida enjoyed her time outside, she hadn't gotten much and after so long of camping out in the woods she was surprised to find that she had missed it. The sun on her skin, the fresh breeze ruffling her white hair. It was peaceful. As was the buzz of people walking around the town.
Perhaps it would seem strange, a blind guard. Something of an oxymoron, Vaida kept her pace and guard as she walked with purpose and the ease of someone who could see in the traditional sense of where they were going. But the white-haired girl was blindfolded, and yet she surveyed her surroundings with a keen sense. Dressed all in traditional black, and one long, thin blade strapped across her back. But despite her rather grim dress and focus, she seemed pleased, as though her day were going finely.
Vaida raises a hand up, "No, thank you." she tells him, lowering her arm with a soft smile and nodding in agreement. "I do believe that as much as I would enjoy a life of peace and beautiful scenery I would not appreciate it near as much as I do now if I had that life."
With a slow gesture, Vaida motions to Dorian her original spot. She would much rather be sitting right now anyways, enjoying the fresh air. She picks up Luna, and returns the blade to its twin, along with the rest of her stuff before sitting herself in the soft grass and dirt at the water's edge. Here, the blue water mixes slowly with the landscape as it moves up, closer to where her bare feet are stretched out.
"Though it hardly matters to me, I don't quite get to see beautiful scenery as most do," she tells him, tugging at the piece of black silk wrapped firmly around her eyes.
"So then, Commander. What do you do when you are not leading your merry band of mercenaries, or enjoying pleasant sceneries?"
Vaida cracks a smile at the phrase 'secret ninja thing' and shakes her head. Though the idea was not quite off from the truth, she didn't quite want to share with a near stranger that she was the royal guard to the hidden royal family. There were many in this kingdom that would gladly have away with the siblings entirely. But there were Sheikah all over the isle that had plenty of jobs of every kind.
"Yes, I do not so often have the free time to relax. I thought the lake would be quite the place, to enjoy the peace and quiet that this kingdom has so rarely offered recently," she replies, giving him another once over as he settles himself a short distance away from her. Close enough to be polite, far enough to have reaction time should she try something. He was bigger than her though, and casually Vaida keeps herself leaned back slightly, not quite noticeably but comfortably for her.
"Ah, so your title is somewhat for show then? You play the face of the group, she is actually the muscle," she jokes, lips quirking up into a smile.
Vaida glances briefly around the shore of the lake, back at her stuff lying in a simple pile. "Good to have people around you that you trust though, sometimes difficult in my line of work. Not those closest to me of course, but sometimes you come across those that only make your situation work."
Peace. That was all she had wanted. To enjoy the quiet and not have to worry about plans, plots, tyrants, lost royalty. But this realm and the Goddesses clearly believed that other plans were in the works for Vaida, and they all involved fighting for her life. From birth, she had not been blessed with ease, not with her mother's death, her blindness, and her capabilities for the shadows. She was made for the life she was living, such was her fate. But some days, when Vaida could lose herself in her mind for just a few moments, she imagined she wasn't. That she could live a life of peace and travel, of beautiful things.
Quickly Vaida stood, she was not well armored and armed with just Luna, the white and charcoal blade sheathed and gripped in her right hand. She couldn't remove the silk blindfold from her face, the sunlight would only hinder her, and by the sound of the man approaching he was armed well. With a graceful set of movements, Vaida stepped around her discarded clothes and towards the voice, walking along the shore. She had not yet drawn Luna from its sheath, opting to wait until she knew for sure that this would end in a fight.
"I am of the Sheikah. They call me Vaida. Now your name, in return." she called out, pale lips thinning into a line when she was done.
As she walked, through the blindfold Vaida could make out the distinct figure of a man, he held his weapons aloft, clearly trained though she could not make out details of him. Perhaps if he saw her, blind as she was, even armed, he would lower them. Whether or not he attacked her thinking her less than capable of defending herself was his mistake.
White hair fluttered around her face in the soft breeze that came off the lake, standing there in all black with a weapon of pure white in hand must've been a rather surreal sight. She wondered what the stranger made of her. She had announced herself as a Sheikah, by now the man must realize she was trained in combat, and Luna, along with Solar that sat on the shore some feet away, were not the weapons of amateurs.
She hated strangers, but an armed stranger she knew how to deal with when threatened. "I do not appreciate threats against my life, lay down your arms and I shall lay down mine. This is a place for peace." her voice, a soft lilting tone was calm, even as she spoke. As though the young woman were used to dealing with threats as calmly as possible.

It had been exactly what she needed, the calm atmosphere, lovely weather, and silence in all but the sounds of nature. These last months had been filled with stress and activity, the Heroes had known no peace since it all started with them fleeing and gathering in those woods. Esme had been antsy, wanting to be free of the confines of the forest and ruins, and Vaida didn't blame her. The young woman too wished for freedom. And, in this moment of peace, they were gathering it.
Vaida had been sent off, scouting the surrounding area. Given her natural affinity for shadows and quiet, she made an excellent scout. Though an unconventional one, rather than perfect eyesight, Vaida was highly attuned to her ears. And in the shadows, her limited eyesight managed to catch movement precisely if not a perfect image.
The tail end of her scouting though, she'd made her way to Lake Hylia and so entranced with the fresh air and quiet, Vaida took her time in relaxing by the shore of the lake. White hair had been swept back away from her face which was uptilted to catch the warm sunlight, and the layers of her normal black uniform had been shed down to the slim black pants and blouse she wore. Shoes, gloves, and swords lying nearby on the shore. Here, in the open air and the smell of fresh water, Vaida was at peace for once since the beginning of it all.
But she was highly attuned to the air around her, prepared to spring should it change. So when the blindfolded young woman senses the presence of another in the vicinity, her hand slowly creeps towards her blade, head turning towards the source.
"You, who are you?" she asks, though her sharp tone implies a demand.
The piece of parchment crumpled in her gloved fist as Vaida with equal measures of confidence and rage stalked through Castle Town and made her way to the gates of Hyrule Castle themselves. Esme was missing, taken, and it was her fault. she had given the girl an inch of space; the claustrophobia of the camp getting to both of them. Vaida hadn't been far, but she was far enough that by the time Vaida had made it to Esme's last location, she was gone.
It had to be Eleazar, he'd got another shot at hurting the royal family and took it. Less than a week after the miracle that was Kura Hyrule waking up, and what had seemed to begin a better period of time for the Heroes, and now this.
Vaida knew how to avoid notice, despite the striking appearance of her dressed in all black, Vaida managed to avoid notice, sticking to the shadows, her natural element. She's almost to the gates when she spots him, not quite like one normally sees someone, but she makes out his figure behind the sheen of the ribbon around her eyes and approaches him calmly, sensing the tense nature. Had he a similar note? Someone close to him taken by that tyrant? He seemed so young, and yet not. Vaida took two more steps, coming to a silent stop near him, and in a quiet voice spoke.
"Did you receive a letter as well?"

The scarlet-colored eyes of the Sheikah lit up at the excitement Esme displayed at the cake. Knowing that if there was anything in this world the young princess appreciated, it was food. Sweets were the better. Her lips shaping into a small and amused smile at the sight. "I found us lacking in important supplies, anyone could've gone but it is as much my duty to keep you safe as it is to make sure you are provided for and as comfortable as any of us can be," she tells the girl, knowing that she had missed watching the princess train, but also knowing that Esme would not find a rival in archery easily.
"Your training these days seems to only prove your already developed skill. And know that you are surrounded by others who would die to keep you safe just as soon as I would. And my patrols only serve to keep you safer, to know that we are well guarded in these woods." Vaida can only imagine what Esme must feel with the inaction. She herself, had only barely contained irritability at times between her sweeps of the woods. These supply runs were what kept the young Sheikah level-headed. And level-headed was what she needed to be to protect her princess.
The Sheikah moves casually, seating herself cross-legged on an old stump, the very picture of casualness with Esme. But her ears and eyes were ever alert for the slightest shift in the winds, trees, and brush. Not just for enemies, but should another attendant or servant be on their way, Vaida almost never lets them catch the casual way she acted around the princess. Lest those who would disagree at the sight be nearby.
"Her Highness is right, there is safety here. And despite what you may think, traipsing around lost in these woods is not the most exciting."
What Esme talks about, draws a very thin line in what was appropriate for Vaida to do. While she attended Princess Esme, and before recent events, much of it had been sneaking into places they didn't belong or trips to Castle Town. But there had been little chance of harm to Esme during these trips. In this forest, not only was it the monsters and creatures lurking about, but the Lost Woods were known to be the downfall of people who didn't understand its riddles.
Asking Vaida to not even follow her, was out of the question. The woman didn't want to risk anything happening to Esme. The girl was too sweet, too important to lose. She could be a figurehead for her people, so outspoken and confident. She helped in camp. Where she was safe.
"I understand your wishes, Esme. I know you hate this idleness, the feeling as though you can't do anything. But it is dangerous out there, not exciting. You don't know who out there works for Elezear, or if they just want a ransom reward." she explains, frowning softly at the girl in front of her.
"I would not be against showing you the forest, as long as we stay inside the forest. But if you wander away, get lost, or give me one reason to believe you'd leave these woods I would have to drag you back to camp, where it's safe. I will not leave you to your own devices, your siblings would have a worse time dealing with my head than if I at least accompanied you. You could hunt, bring back fresh meat for everyone. I'm sure it'd be well appreciated. Assuming your family did not object."
At the last line, Vaida raised an eyebrow. Challenging her princess somewhat. She couldn't do anything that inherently harmed Esme, but a walk through the woods with someone who had managed to memorize its pathways was safe. Armed, they would be safe. It was towing a dangerous line for Vaida, one that she normally didn't mind crossing. But with everything that had happened she was nervous, she understood; but it did not assuage the fear in her gut.
All this time in the Woods, had lent Vaida the ability to maneuver through its winding paths and tricks of the mind with relative ease. Or at least, at a comfortable pace for the Sheikah woman. She had spent more time combing the edges of the forest, making sure that every ward and trap laid down, than she had actually in the camp set up in the old Temple. Safety was the priority when it came to the Royal Family, every attendant, guard, and loyalist would agree. Vaida was not one to take chances when the cost were the lives of those she held dear to her.
So early this morning, much before anyone else had awoken, Vaida took her time getting to the edges of the Lost Woods. She passed every trap and marked it accordingly for her trip back, leaving the sanctity of the hideout of the Royal Family. The trees and magic swallowing their new home up into the background.
Thus it had come time for Vaida to do what she had planned. A quick supply run, small things; easy to find and barter with merchants that traveled these roads from village to village. She even wondered if some of the braver ones tried to return to Hyrule Castle Town. Where rumor had long been spread of the dissent and chaos it contained. If any of her compatriots found her, she was sure the resulting conversation would be the least pleasant thing in this realm. And the Goddess help her if it happened. But Sheikah training was thorough, and she had always excelled in what she enjoyed. And what she enjoyed, was traveling unseen. Disguised, her Sheikah bodysuit hidden under comfortable and indistinguishable traveler's clothes, the normal coif she so preferred having around her face hung loosely around her neck, and a cloak to cover any distinct facial features. Not that Vaida imagined herself as enemy number one. It was better to be safe than lost.
It had taken several hours, the better part of the morning and into the afternoon and she was sure someone may have wondered about her disappearance. But it didn't matter, Vaida had gotten everything she'd come for and more from a merchant traveling northward between villages. He'd stopped at a junction in a nearby river to rest and that's where Vaida found him. All charming smiles and curious questions. In return, he'd only asked a couple of rather innocuous questions before trading with her, and the two were on their separate paths.
Vaida took the extra precautions getting back into the Woods. She spent her time quickly crossing the small river and entered the Woods a different part than where she exited. Finding her way back to the Temple with minimal trouble. To find Esme had gone off to train.
Dropping both pack and traveler's clothes aside she makes her way over to the youngest princess, a small box in hand. And naturally the princess had heard her coming.
"Well, I bring a present. A...misuse of expenses no doubt," she says, her quiet and rather reserved tone of voice warmed at the sight of her friend and princess. Inside the box, was a slightly smushed but no less promised delicious slice of cake the merchant had let her take. Apparently homemade by the man's wife.
If there was one thing, in the hundreds of years she'd lived that made her happier, it was Princess Esmerelda smiling. And though the reasoning behind it was a sorrowful one, His Majesty had recently passed, and losing the last of her parents had clearly been a toll on the young princess; it had also led to a new her. The once quiet and reserved princess who spoke little, even to her attendant, had brightened. Taking it upon herself to be her best, studying relentlessly, practicing at archery and horseback with a dedication Vaida had only seen in the long-lived Sheikah.
Vaida watched Esmerelda on horseback, the both of them, as through the trees they maneuvered, the princess ahead of her a bow drawn as she shot target after target. Her attendant watching with eyes of a hawk. Not that anything dangerous could really be traipsing across the grounds at the height of day, it did not hurt to be cautious. If anything, Esmerelda was more the danger to herself, though she'd quickly become quite the adept on horseback, the animals could be wild when provoked wrongly. So Vaida simply kept up a quick trot behind the princess, careful to remain out of her line of shot.
The two girls were young, in their respective ways. Vaida, centuries older than the princess still felt like a child among many of the other attendants, but she was still another older sister to her, one whose time was dedicated to taking care of the young girl. She knew the kinship between them was shared in likeness by few others. Possibly the other attendants and their royals, but the circumstances between these girls had made them kin, as if the Goddess had decided it herself.
An arrow twanging against a target, dead center, draws Vaida from her thoughts.
Trailing after the princess a bit faster, she rounded a set of trees and drew her horse up close to the princess's crimson eyes bright in the midday sunlight and a soft smile on her normally neutral face at the young girl.
"Quite the shot, my lady. You're practically a natural at this," she tells the girl, watching as the princess gallops across the grounds cheerfully, continuing to shoot. Some miss, some do not. And from the short distance, Vaida can see a strong royal seated upon that horse. And she can only grin at any part she had in it.
Before the Civil War, when she was simply the attendant to Princess Esmerelda, Vaida was a carefree woman, young compared to many of the other attendants and far more willing to bend to what her princess wanted. She has always had a sense of duty in her life, but never felt that one must sacrifice their self in order to complete it.
Afterwards, the fleeing of Hyrule Castle shocked Vaida to her core, though her princess was safe as were her siblings, she felt something similar, but that changes were among the horizons and one must adapt to their new lives always. Gone was much of the carefree attitude, replaced with a loyalty so profound that when faced with any obstacle, she would fight it for the royal family.
Rules however, have always remained bendy, Vaida learned quickly how to skirt the edge of every rule and find loopholes to what anyone said. She was far more capable of doing what needed to be done. Duty only went so far, when your duty was to the wrong thing.
It has always been said that she was aloof, what people said about her has never affected Vaida's decisions in life, nor her attitude towards it. Which is that if you don't catch life by the jaws, it will catch you. Vaida is always looking for a grand adventure and something of purpose, and people's opinions weren't going to change, and neither was she. She comes across as carefree and her head up in the clouds when she is not on immediate duty to Esme, and many times when she is, though the girl is careful not to let other take notice.
Vaida can be rather flirtatious despite her quiet and intense nature, when she finds someone approachable she may joke with them and flirt harmlessly. She enjoys amiable conversation and like many women, attractive men and women to have these conversations with.
Despite her willingness to adventure, and her loyalty, Vaida is rather quiet and prefers to not speak longer than necessary to strangers. Only those closest to her have heard more than a handful of sentences at a time, at a volume louder than a whisper.
This gives Vaida a quiet but intense personality, a strong backbone and the courage to tilt her chin up at the world.
LIKES
[attr="class","scroll"]
Reading: There is always something alluring about a book, no matter the subject, Vaida will gladly take new reading material to devour in her spare time.
Being outdoors: The clean air, the sounds of nature, remind her of her roots. And she has always enjoyed both the light of the sun and moon against her as she travels.
Adventure: Despite the horrors she's seen, and the trouble grand adventures cause, Vaida is always willing to find new places and explore.
Spicy food: any flavor capable of making her gasp in surprise is the greatest.
Quiet Contemplation: Vaida enjoys long stretches of time where it is just herself and only one other. It allows her time to focus and meditate on her life.
DISLIKES
[attr="class","scroll"]
Strangers: if she isn't buying anything from them, she refuses to speak more than a couple words.
Being stationary: if she's forced to stay in one spot, particularly small and cramped ones, Vaida typically becomes antsy and snappish.
Long hair: she cut her hair many years ago, too easy to get caught by, and she believes the style compliments her well.
MOTIVATIONS
[attr="class","scroll"]
The protection of Esmerelda Hyrule, the young girl she is tasked with protecting with her life. Esmerelda is not only her charge, but her close friend.
To one day see Hyrule restored to its former glory: and to help restore it in turn.
A life of adventure: even the smallest of adventures are a goal to achieve.
FEARS
[attr="class","scroll"]
Losing Esmerelda: the consequences aside, should the princess be lost, Vaida would be without a close friend, and would lose all trust in herself.
To die without seeing the world, every inch of it.
Curses: there is magic in the world, not all good, and that darker magic leaves a chill in Vaida's bones that will not dissipate.
HISTORY
Almost four hundred years ago, Vaida was born into a Sheikah clan much like many of them, her mother though, had died shortly after her birth leaving her father and the clan to raise her. A community that shared everything and were good. There was peace in Hyrule, and despite the proficient family that she had come from, it became noted after some time into her childhood that Vaida didn't quite have the perfect vision that most Sheikah had. Though she was quite aware of her surroundings and in close quarter areas was a good fighter, the world for her was blurred and her eyes were too sensitive for the normal light of Hyrule and she began blindfolding herself and training the rest of her senses.
She trained to become the shadows, to move silently and stay out of the light, her hearing became brilliant and she could feel the shift in the wind that a person produced when they came too close. And though her intense personality had always shone in certain situations, it became apparent quickly that Vaida was suited to the task as the attendant of Esmerelda Hyrule, a shadow that waited in the dark to strike. And as soon as she was appointed, it became her life's goal to see the princess safe and happy.
Before that time though, Vaida took it upon herself to see what parts of the world she could, and visited places across Hyrule and even the borders of Labrynna. When she came back, her heart, though still set on adventure; had settled and was ready to devote herself to the royal family.
She'd been tasked to watch Esmerelda when the girl was young, and while Vaida had been just out of adolescence, she knew what the young princess would deal with after the tragedy of her birth. Vaida was intimately familiar with the sorrow, and vowed to help Esmerelda move past it, and be her best self. Vaida had always felt she was another older sister, and the two girls bonded near immediately.
When the royal family were uprooted from the castle, Vaida stayed with Esmerelda and helped the family flee as best as she could. Joining the Heroes of Hyrule by extension and loyalty. Now, her duty is to see the royal family returned, and Esmerelda happy where she belongs.
APPEARANCE
Similar in appearance to many Sheikah, Vaida possesses bright white hair that is cut to a bob around her chin with bangs that hang around her face. She is pale, freckles dotting along her cheekbones and nose bridge. A high-cheekboned and narrow face with round eyes of purple; though her eyes and much of her upper face is covered by a black satin ribbon that acts as a blindfold.
She is rather petite, standing only about 5'5 and thin. Most of her body weight coming from the muscles she developed in training. Vaida is long-legged and has a rather whispy and nonchalant way of moving that makes her seem carefree or careless.
Most of Vaida's wardrobe is her customary black, though it is much more girly and formal than most Sheikah.
