Strange. It was the only word that Zelda could reflect on the normalcy of the city. As if nothing ever happened; as if the civilians were never pushed into fear. As if hundreds had not died for this conclusion.
What little they knew now, the better off they were. Allow them to cling to their hopes and happiness while there was still time. There was nothing she could do--not until they returned with a resolution.
For the coming weeks, Zelda had confided herself within the castle walls. If she was not needed for formalities, she spent most of her time alone. Today... she would take her first step into the city, when peace was finally belonging to everyone. A queen will never be at peace, as long as her mind wanders, though.
Fitted with a ruffled white shirt and her hair laced with a bow, a navy bustle, and silk gloves, the queen had sneaked away from the council in order to take a walk within the courtyard, to the edge of the castle gates. It was quiet, and no one seemed to have noticed as she disappeared from the gardens.
Laughter and music could be heard from the garden's edge, as she slowly approached the secret gates to the far side of the city. Dancing and festivities never slept when the city returned to its freedom. The minstrels rejoiced and the people sang joyous tunes with them.
Would the people recognize her? Gone for so many years and in hiding for so long... would they remember the face of their queen? Her fingers gripped the iron gates, desperately wanting to find some pleasure in her constant worried state. Pulling back the gates, she stepped forward into the city. breathing steady as she let the sun's warmth flood her face.
Becoming one with her people, her lips slowly gave into a smile. The streets were warm and welcoming. Memories flooded of when she was a child and would run through the streets. The high she chased after to be secretive and hidden from the world, but among it all at once.
She made her way to a fountain, sitting down beside as she basked in the sun.
Zelda felt the world freeze as the woman once known as her sister dawned the mask upon her face. Exhaling for the last time, her gentle touch upon her own mask slowly elevated to her face. Closed eyes, she felt the static between the space of her nose and the brim of the mask touch, as it clamped on, pins and needles suddenly engulfing her body.
Her eyes flashed open, she let out a shriek in pain as she stumbled to the floor. Her mind screamed out as the pain drove through her back. Every thought she just had became confused as the burning pain licked up her body like scorching fire. She could hear people around the castle screaming and shouting. Mentally anger swiped through at this chaos and pain, pain for those around her. She wanted to protect them increasing her own agony in defense of others. But she couldn't. She rolled up in a ball of self loathing and pain, wishing the world to end rather then this sea of endless currents; some strong while others weak, but the waves always crashed over her, permanently.
For then, as the pain became greatest, she rammed her fists into the ground, and let the power flow through her like electricity--like light. Her eyes darted up at Majora, a blinding ray of light shot out with each eye, before a plume of light radiated out from her. From the ashes and pain, a goddess rose. Radiating with light that flowed in and out from her touch. Memories flooded back, of thousands of lifetimes. Every Zelda, every era, every failure, every victory.
"You forget why I was chosen and you were naught. Every moment of our existence would lead us here. Do not forget your place in this world. The hero was not stolen from you... he had a purpose far greater than yours. He is the protector of the realm, not your pet to entertain yourself with. He belongs with the light. You belong in the shadows."
Stretching her arm out, her fingers expanded as a blade came to her side. The Rapier of light, engulfed with a golden aura. A smirk veiled over the Goddess of Time's expression, before she moved her free hand forward with a motion of invitation. "See what power you've been missing out on, dear sister. You will always be second best."

The weight of the world was on Zelda's shoulders. All the reasons not to do this come flooding in, as if her body chemistry just sent them a blanket invitation. She felt soft panic that could grow or fade depending on what she does next. It will fade if she backs away, but the lives lost today would be all for nothing. Majora was behind this door.
Panic swelled for a moment, engulfing her entire body from her feet to the hairs of her neck. One hand gripping tightly on the Hylia mask, the other gripped to the handle of the ornate door. The inky darkness engulfs the frail light, diminishing all happiness and bliss that had risen with the sun. Now only silence lingers in the air.
Taking a deep breath, the heiress pulled hard on the door, yanking it back before stepping inside affirmatively.
Garbed in white, Zelda approached the center of the room, stopping to face Majora before exhaling and holding the mask up.
“This ends now. We’re taking back our city, and you’re going back where you belong.”

The princess closed her eyes, sighing as she thought further on what exactly could be done to help prevent her demise. If there really was a piece of herself inside of Midna... could it be her ancestor had sacrificed some of her grace to save Midna?
"The grace," she murmured. "You say my former self sacrificed it to you?"
That was the only way. If not all of her grace, some would suffice for now. At least, she hoped so. She tremored for a moment as she tried to find the balance to stay upright, but her muscles became heavier and heavier.
"I believe that's the only way. Temporarily at most, but enough to give me time."
She reached her hand up in an attempt to grab at the light. The light that dimly lit where the Triforce once merged at the base of her hand. She sighed, using any and all power she had left to do a light transfer spell.

She didn't want the moment to end.But his words gave her comfort as her eyes wandered across his facial features, studying them carefully as she tried to read what he may be thinking.
He kissed her one last time before offering his hand to her to help her up. She took it carefully, pulled to her feet before looking into the portal carefully. Link could feel something; that was good, wasn't it? What exactly was waiting for them at the end of the tunnel?
Before he would take the step in, he hesitated, turning to her and asking why they were there, and for some reason... she couldn't give an answer. She didn't really know what brought her here, but she had heard an ancient treasure laid hidden inside. Whatever it was, it could be useful.
"The rumor mill had me wondering what could be hidden in the lair. Apparently something very valueable." A hand was held out once more, and she looked over it carefully. Soon, their troubles would be over, and they'd get out of here. She hoped. They hadn't seen any monsters yet, which worried her. Maybe it was a divine prank.
Or maybe it was a trap.
She couldn't think that way though. She nodded, taking his hand and stepping forward into the portal. "Let's go."

"A piece of myself...?" Zelda inquired for a moment as she tried to remember these moments of history. There was nothing in her texts - not even the journals of her past selves that even mentioned that she sacrificed parts of her soul to save Midna. Could this really be true?
She knew now that this was, indeed, the Twilight Princess that she had heard so much about from that era of time. She could feel it, and because of that feeling, she was in pain. The attempts of grasping those memories of her past self put her body through an attack on its own anatomy; as though her soul was trying to do more than it was capable of.
"Link can't know," she looked at Midna desperately. "He'd blame himself if he saw me like this. I don't regret what I did. Even if I defied the very laws of nature I wouldn't take it back. Hyrule needs its hero."
She thought further on what Midna had mentioned about that piece of herself, and pondered on if it would truly work to put it back within herself. Was the piece big enough to save her? Or just tide her over until she could find the mask?
The mask.
She needed the mask.
She felt panic serge through her as she tried to think of how she was going to get it back. The master sword was broken. The sacred stones were given back to their respective keepers. There was no true way of entering the Sacred Realm anymore, which meant that her mask was compromised for the moment.
"Link needs to reforge the sword. I'm not well right now, but I'm counting on this guild to ensure that he meets that expectation. I can sense that you hold deep sentiment for the hero, and I'd like to request your aid in making sure he obtains this goal, should this magic not work."

She winced for a moment, but the pain became natural for the heiress as she moved in sync with the Twili. She wished she could remember who she was or why she had come. She wished it was that easy, but it was as though pieces of her memorys had fragmented into absence.
She had apologized for causing this pain, but Zelda didn't want to believe it was truly from her presence. "It's okay. I'll be okay. I just need to get back to camp..." she assured her. Perhaps there, she'd be able to see the doctor.
The two of them walked with haste--or well, as much haste as they could. The camp came into the distance, and Zelda felt relief wash over her as guards had came to approach them quickly. "I need a doctor--please give our friend anything she needs. She helped me," Zelda explained as she took the hand of the guard.
Slowly the two of them were led toward a pavillion where several cots were laid out, many with soldiers who were still injured from the battle at Symmetry City. Taking a seat at one of her own, the doctor approached quickly.
She had no idea what was wrong. Physically, she seemed fairly healthy, especially for just waking up after two weeks of being rendered unconscious. But now? She wasn't sure what it was. The pain came and gone, but when it came, it was like a thousand needles digging into her chest.
"I'm... not sure what it is," the doctor admitted. "You're fine. Completely healthy, but your body is fighting itself, as if you've put something foreign in it."
He thought for a moment, and so did Zelda. What could she have done that would have caused her body to have such a reaction like this? Could it have been the air from the Sacred Realm? Or putting on the Hylia Mask? Oh. Her heart sunk, and immediately she remembered.
"I know what it is," she admitted carefully, looking down shamefully. "No one can know. Both of you must promise to keep your word," she sighed. "I gave up my grace to open the Sacred Realm and bring Link back. I put it there in his place. So now, my soul is normal. No Hylia magic. The cycle is broken."
"You wre able to save your hero. Why not her? There has to be some sort of magic, she's only on the brink. We can still do something, right?"
The words stung for a moment as they lingered in the damp air. She wished there was something she could do. There had to be a way... but it wasn't the same. It just wasn't. Link wasn't dead, he was just in another realm. Kura was unconscious - forever on the brink of death but not able to wake up.
"Esme, it isn't quite that simple... Elinkar's position isn't comparable to Kura's. At best, she's alive, but that's it. She isn't conscious. Link was trapped in an entirely different realm."
If only her soul had been complete. She could use her sealing magic to--
She stopped for a moment, biting hard on her lip. Only days earlier, she had come in contact with an old ally of her ancestor - one that held resonance of her previous self's grace.
She had gifted it to her, saving her from uncertainty and agonizing pain, but perhaps... if she was able to use this magic in the past to save Midna... she could do it again now.
She would most certainly be weakened by this, maybe even die. But it was her duty to protect her family.
"Stand back, everyone. We do not speak of this to anyone. No one can know! Not even Link. Okay?" she turned to her siblings with a determined scowl.
Letting a hand fall over Kura's forehead, she closed her eyes, looking within herself for the small bit of grace that was left within her. She detached it, wincing slightly, as she focused that energy to pass it onto Kura.
It was painful, but she was able to control it. She let out a deep breath, a golden glow illuminating from her hand as it spread out over her sister's body, and in a blinding flash, the magic was gone.
She could feel the emptiness inside of her... and yet she didn't feel faint. She was fine, actually. Did it work?

He wanted her help.
As awful as the circumstances were, and how delicate he had become, she had been thankful for the first time in forever that he was now inviting her aid. He fell to his knees, holding onto her carefully as his face had dug into her skirt fabric.
His hands held hers tightly, as he looked up at her begging for her to help him. She bit her lip, unsure what to say, but let him continue to speak as she moved down to meet him on the floor.
He was ready to go and finish what they started. He was ready to be her hero. Energy blossomed through her like a current, as she smiled brightly. "Really? You mean it?" she asked, almost as though she was stunned.
The dungeon was dark, and the portal was the only source of light as her sealing magic had diminished to nothing. She let out a nervous laugh to break the silence before hugging him tightly--so tightly, that she lost her balance and fell beside him, pulling him down with her. But as she turned to meet his gaze, she kissed him gingerly before her smile faltered.
"I didn't know what I was gonna do without you..."

'It's heavy' was the only way she could define it. She had to carry it around even though she never wanted to. It was always over her, casting its shadow on her life. It was hung by a thin thread, too fragile to hold something so heavy. Most of the time she didn't know what caused the thread to finally break releasing the weight on her. It fell too fast, and before she could run she'd be pinned down. It crushed her ribs, made it hard for her to breathe. She tried to scream; a cry for help was of no use. No one else could see it - the weight that had been slowly crushing her to death. [break][break] Anything that happened, that caused her family pain was always her burden to carry. Had she woken sooner, she would have prevented this from happening--or so she wanted to believe. It was her fault. [break][break] Zelda worried. Things she felt she should have done, coupled with her perceived failures dominated her mind. She thought about her actions and words, finding them inadequate. Festering guilt rendered her mind ineffective, her short term memory shot. [break][break] Often while she dwelt on the fine details of the past few years, the big picture escaped her. She worked so hard to support and feed those who swore fealty. She promised to bring them home. Now they were angry; half of them were dead while the others were living on rations. All they saw was a desperate lover who frittered and gambled their supplies to save a broken man rather than working toward an actual freedom. [break][break] She didn't blame Artemis for reacting the way that he did to this ceremony; there wasn't a point. They had nothing left to them anymore, and he felt this whole situation was his own fault. Whem Esmerelda had suddenly broken the uncomfortable silence with brash words, Zelda shifted in surprise. [break][break] "Esmerelda!" Zelda snapped quickly, her voice shaken from the cold air and lack of proper emotion. "Before you speak, think of your words carefully. Neither of us were there when our sister was killed, but Artemis was. He did everything he could to protect her from harm, but we were too late." [break][break] She closed her eyes, taking one final look at the body before looking to her hands. There must have been something she could do... [break][break] "You cannot put this on him. We're all on edge. We're all feeling the guilt. Lashing out on each other is the last thing she would want."

The twili fell with the queen as her knees became weak. She breathed raggedly, trying to suppress the sudden onset of pain she felt, looking up into the eyes of the woman in front of her. Why did it hurt so much? [break][break] It was like putting a puzzle together, but missin the final piece. The shape was clear, but it wasn't among the options. She knew what it was, but it didn't exist. [break][break] As if someone had tampered with her memory and took away an element she knew used to belong there. Her thouch was warm, not like that of a usual twili - or so she assumed. She had never been this close to one, and the feeling of her flesh was not what she expected. [break][break] "Please help me back to camp," she breathed out helplessly. She had to try not to think about it. She had to ignore what she was trying to piece together. Maybe then it would stop hurting. [break][break] This woman was a stranger. She had to pretend they never met... for a little while at least. Maybe there was a way to prevent this from happening! Maybe she could suppress it! [break][break] Now was not the time to worry about that. Trying to pull herself up from the ground, she breathed out sharply before lifting up the lantern. She tried to ignore it, but her face was crimson in its subdue. [break][break] "It's this way," she moved her hand to motion in the direction.

His voice caught the air and hung in suspense, as though she was waiting for something to drop and shatter to the ground. Or to wake up and it was all a dream. She felt his weight shift to her side as he sunk into the mattress, but she didn't know what to say. Was it him? Was it really him? [break][break] It sounded like him, but was it really? [break][break] His hand moved to her side, assuringly tracing her with its gentle touch as his voice spoke more clearly, but still with shortness. She turned over in a huff, hoping to meet familiar eyes, and as his line of vision crossed with hers, she felt as though she were crushed beneath the goddess's hands. [break][break] Not much had changed. He was visibly aged, but not how she had imagined. His hair was longer, his eyes were tired. Was he skinnier? She could barely make words in her own mind as she glanced from place to place to register his presence. [break][break] She of course, may not have changed much at all... other than her lack of regality. No longer constricted by the modern fashion of a noble, her hair was unkempt. Her clothing were simple. Perhaps the most obvious change was her hardened gaze. [break][break] She went blank. She had no idea what to say. All she wanted to do was look at him; it stirred memories of her childhood, like when her mother rewarded her with a gift she worked so tirelessly to obtain, and when she finally received it, she didn't even dare open it. She just wanted to admire its packaging; the fact that it was hers. [break][break] Her hand moved up, and as it did, her body moved from its laying position and she knelt on the bed beside him. Gently, her fingers cusped his cheek before tracing the flesh and pushing stray hairs out of his vision. [break][break] "H-how are you feeling?" she mumbled out. She didn't know what else to say. She was so captivated by his presence she almost forgot about her own grief.

[music]http://k003.kiwi6.com/hotlink/j1x2jsqd92/Ori_and_the_Blind_Forest_OST_-_04_-_The_Blinded_Forest.mp3[/music] [break][break] Exhaustion fell over the young woman, her lids heavy as she slid to a tree and leaned against it for support. The grief was settling in again, and she could feel the bile moving to the back of her throat as she thought about their situation once more. [break][break] She was going to kill Eleazar for what he did. [break][break] No one was around, and for once she could dispel herself from her automaton facade. She squeaked as a breath narrowly escaped from her constricted throat, her chest tightening into shallow breaths. She tried to fight the urge to scream, but the frustration of everything - her sister, her lossed men, Elinkar, and Eleazar - began to build up like vomit. [break][break] Before she could let it go, she was alarmed by the sound of a woman's voice. She froze in place, she felt the shadow of a person approach abruptly, and suddenly they were inches separated. [break][break] She flung the lantern forward in front of her to create a defensive distance as she jolted backwards in surprise. Who was she? Why was she so tall? Where did she come from? [break][break] Her words had flown over her head, unable to absorb most of the information from it because of the adrenaline pumping. She only heard the name Midna. [break][break] Midna? Why did that sound so familiar? Had she heard it before? Was she an ally? She took a better look at her appearance, taking note of the unnaturally glowy skin and fiery hair. [break][break] She was a twili. Did they know any twili? The only one she had ever met was sided with the false King. [break][break] Midna. [break][break] The name felt somewhat calming to hear, as if something was telling her it was safe. She closed her eyes, looking deep into her memories to try and find... [break][break] Nothing. [break][break] Her eyes opened and she felt her heart drop into her stomach. [break][break] There was nothing left of her former incarnations in her memories. It was all trapped in that mask. [break][break] "Midna..." she said softly, as though saying it would stir any form of thought. "I don't remember... I can't." [break][break] Her face became blank and drained of color. She suddenly felt a void in her being, as though something crucial was missing from her omnitude. It hurts... [break][break] She felt fatigued again - like when she had just returned from the sacred realm before passing out for weeks. But this time it's different. As though trying to dig into her ability to recover the past was too unstable to recollect, and her body wasn't capable of processing that kind of power anymore. [break][break] Her hand moved up and lightly cusped the top of her head. She rubbed it for a moment and tried to regain her energy. Something was off - it wasn't just her ability to remember that was throwing off her equilibrium - it was the woman. Midna - a memory of her past in flesh, and it was offsetting. She felt nauseous. [break][break] "I need help," she spat out suddenly, dropping to her knees as her vision trailed and blurred. "I NEED HELP!" She screamed in agony. Her chest throbbed in, as though it was being pulled into her center - she couldn't breathe.
