[attr="class","text-area"] Octavian, ever the gentleman, raised his head to sniff the hand the second time it was offered. He lipped the woman's hand and, finding no treats, continued up her arm to lip at her shoulder, just in case. "You can pet his face, if you'd like," Nerina suggested idly. "If you're gentle and you scratch right under his ears, he likes that." The horse, given no reason to stop, would rest his lips on her shoulder (and drool a little bit) if she allowed it. She let the woman pamper her horse, smiling to herself as she thought back to other, similar experiences. "Horses are good listeners," she said, after a while. "I think that's one of the reasons I love them. When you look at them, it's like... I know this is silly," she interrupted herself, "because I know they can't, I mean, they mostly communicate with body language anyway. But it really does feel like they understand what you're telling them, especially when they just... fix you with that one-eyed stare." She cupped her soup and took a big gulp. Oops. Still too hot. Wincing, she swallowed, then blew on the cup. "By the way, I'm glad you like the soup. I can tell you the recipe, if you want it."

[attr="class","text-area"]Surprised by the forthright request, Nerina blinked. "You want... I, I mean, certainly? It's just been so long since anyone's asked me to perform." She brushed herself off, suddenly self-conscious. "I used to be a... bard." The word felt strange on her lips. "I took a more steady job after some things happened. I don't know... Most of my repertoire isn't, I mean..." She gestured to the hall. "I'm not sure it would be fitting for these great halls. But, I mean, there is one song?" [break][break] Nerina strode to the musicians, waiting politely until they had finished their current piece. This is insane, by the way, she thought. You haven't even warmed up. Are we aware? Are we aware that this is insane? Before she could think herself out of it, she waved at the band leader. "Pardon, but the Chieftain asked me to sing. Do you know..." After a brief discussion, they reached the conclusion that no, neither of them knew any songs the other did. "Well, I can sing a cappella, then. Um, thank you for your time."Shit. The band settled, some taking the chance to make adjustments to their instruments as she stepped to the front of their set. [break][break] Nerina took a deep breath, mentally playing the opening guitar melody as she tried to slow her racing heart. Then, closing her eyes, she began to sing.[break][break]
The leading lights of the age all wondered what I would do next...
After all that I'd found in my travels around the world, was there anything left?
'Gentelmen,' I said, 'I've studied the charts, and if what I'm thinkin' is right... there's another new world, at the top of the world, for the first one that breaks through the ice.' And I looked 'round the room...
[break][break] Dramatically, her eyes snapped open, and she stepped forward in time with the song, sweeping with one arm to indicate her captive (thanks to the chieftain's presence) audience. She took a breath, then continued. Her song told a tale of a sea captain, once a great explorer, who had lost his fame as he had already charted the entire ocean. She sang of his desperate hope for one final discovery, a hope that drove him to sail a crew into the icy north so far that their ship, the Annabelle Lee, ran aground. As the captain mourned his losses, she ended the penultimate verse on her knees, leaning into the role — okay, maybe hamming it up a tad bit too much, but she was having fun — before standing with a sigh and ending the song as the captain told of his love for the ship he destroyed.[break][break]
Yes, sometimes at night, in my dreams comes the singing of some unknown tropical bird!
And I smile in my sleep, thinking Annabelle Lee's finally made it to another new world...
[break][break] She let the unfinished chord hang in the silence. Then she bowed her head and swept out her arm in the traditional player's bow, waiting on Koru's approval. Farore preserve me if she hates it.

[attr="class","text-area"]Nerina blinked. Chieftain???"I—" She grinned at Koru's joke. "I see. I'm sure it is, indeed!" She kept her eyes on her horse for as long as possible, but watched the buildings they passed as well. What an interesting way to live. I suppose it makes sense, considering how much wind they must face out here, and I'm sure the winters are fierce... She checked in on Octavian again, then looked back to Koru. "The statues are beautiful. You must have... a great appreciation for art," she stumbled, making a concerted effort to save that sentence.[break][break]
She took in the gate, mildly awestruck. "I had no idea..." she murmured to herself. Watching the other Gorons carefully avoid the rug, she took the hint and stepped carefully off to the side of the carpet, following Koru through the warm halls of the palace. She stayed silent as the chieftain doled out responsibilities left and right. Following Koru to the table, she took a seat, unsure of her responsibilities in this situation. "I look forward to it. I haven't had hearty Goron fare in... years," she responded politely, trying to actually do the math in her head. Must've had at least some since I met Nolana... Lost in thought, Koru's next question hit her in distraction. "Hm? Oh, yes, I have an ear. I sing, I play my flute, and I play guitar, although I don't usually travel with it." She blinked. "I'm sorry, that's probably not what you meant. I do think your musicians are fantastic."

[attr="class","text-area"]The woman grinned. "Horse girl, huh?" She had seen that look on many faces before. "He really is gorgeous. I mean, not to brag," she said quickly, "he was just born that way. We originally bought him as a plowhorse, but he never took to it, so... he's mine." The fondness in her voice was more than obvious. This horse meant the world to her, no matter what she meant to him. (It was an unfortunately common affliction of those who owned horses.) "We fell into postal service on accident. I walked into an interview, and, y'know, they always ask if you have a reliable mode of transportation. They liked how he looked and how I rode, so off we went!" She smiled at him. He completely ignored her. "You're welcome to give him some love, if you'd like. He's friendly."[break][break] Sipping her soup, she looked out at the road, considering her response to Ariadne's guarded words just as carefully. "The heart... wants what it wants, but sometimes the head has to step in. I followed my heart for many, many years, and it's led me on paths less taken." She kept her eyes on the horizon as she spoke. "I don't think I've ever regretted most of what I've discovered that way, but there have been... a few things." She fell silent.

[attr="class","text-area"]The efficiency with which the leaderly Goron distributed mail was frankly terrifying. Nerina stood by and watched, mouth slightly agape, as the woman doled out her deliveries in a fraction of the time she'd originally expected it to take, thereby removing almost any objection she could possibly string together as to why she wouldn't be able to spend time at the palace. "I, I, uh, I —" she stammered, trying to catch the woman's attention, but she relented quickly. Resistance was futile. Bewildered, Nerina thanked the Gorons that thanked her and shook as many hands as she was offered, waiting for the storm to pass.[break][break]
She shook herself out of it and watched the woman summon a patrol of guards. Am I actually dealing with royalty?? she wondered. "There's... I mean, there's really no need to — um, that's, that's my horse, yes, thank... you, ma'am? Oof," she added. A light shove to a Goron had a little more force on a 5'2" Hylian, and she'd always been reedy. Jogging lightly, she soon caught up with the Goron. She nodded along, on firmer ground now. "I was brought up in Labrynna, and I spent plenty of time traveling here. I've never been this far up the ridge — last time I tried, I got a rock in my shoe, and I had to head back down to find someone to heal the damage it did." She drew her cloak closer. "I, um, appreciate that. It'll, uh, make it easier to pass out mail!" she chirped. "And your city is very pretty. The acoustics are amazing... Oh, I'm sorry, I put myself to shame. Where are my manners? You don't know my name! I'm Nerina," she finished, hoping she'd learn her guide and apparent ally's name as well.

[attr="class","text-area"]She nodded in understanding. "Travel can do that." Nerina listened as Ariadne neatly dodged her question, taking note of this for later. "A doctor, hm..." she muttered. She nodded along as the woman explained. "So you're from a city, huh. Lynna would probably suit you, then. It's... nice enough, as cities go. It has a river running through it." She thought for a second. "It does have this... weird tower out back, though. I don't know, it always kind of gave me the creeps." Octavian snorted quietly in the background, and Nerina smacked her forehead. "I can't believe I forgot — that's Tavian. Octavian. My horse." He lifted his head and blinked at them, hearing his name. When food did not immediately follow, he turned back to the grass. "He's really sweet. I don't know how I would get my work done without him to help me cover the ground, honestly."

[attr="class","text-area"]Nerina blinked owlishly at the Goron before her, clearly one held in high regard. She has a palace..."Uh, your —"Do Gorons use titles?? Hold on. The mail... is a branch of the government. Am I technically acting as an emissary for Hyrule?! Was I trained for this??"ma'am," she stumbled, "I... I think I can just call out names to this crowd, but I do... I mean, um, this is... time sensitive material, and... and I'm a government official... because it's the mail," she trailed off lamely. "Let me just... uh..." She backed slowly away from the imposing figure and jogged to her horse. Retrieving her mail sack, she rummaged in it until she found the relevant pieces of mail. "Tavian, I don't know what we walked into..." Tavian blew air out his nose. He seemed exhausted. "But maybe staying at the palace would be a good idea for you. I did make you walk up a whole mountain..." She took a deep breath. "Alright." Turning back to the Goron pile, she shuffled through the pile before walking straight up to the leaderly person. "Do... you know these people?" she asked helplessly. "Otherwise I could just... call out names?"

[attr="class","text-area"]Nerina looked on, faintly bemused, as Ariadne retrieved her own cup from her bag. "Meant for you to just eat from the bowl..." She watched the woman's expression change as she tested the soup, smiling a little at her compliments. "Thanks. My sister, she owns a farm east of here. These are hers. We made the base last winter," she added. "I find it makes for excellent traveling rations." As Ariadne introduced herself, she nodded along. "I go by Nerina. I was... originally from this land," she added. "I traveled it far and wide when I was younger. It's a nice enough place to settle down, providing you find the right community." A perceptive listener might note the edge of a warning in her voice.[break][break]

[attr="class","text-area"]She played steadily, the experience of many years showing in her quick fingering and general unflappability as a large, energetic Goron danced right up to her, nearly making her lose her balance. She gave her a look, somewhere between "why is this happening" and "thank you???" Nerina played on, watching the band leader for the cut off, paying no mind to her enthusiastic fan. As he directed into the final phrase, she put her heart into it, finishing with a flourish; the crowd applauded, and she ducked her head modestly. She finally looked up at her fan. "I'm just the postman, I..." She trailed off as the woman kept speaking. "Palace??" she squeaked. "I don't — I mean, I can't, I have, I have a job to do!" She gestured at Octavian, still placidly hitched to the pole with the satchel of mail roped to his saddle, before she practically had the wind knocked out of her. Then, cursing herself internally as her mouth kept working, she added, "But, um, I could maybe come by after I finish my deliveries???"It has been a while since I've slept in a bed, and that can't hurt...

[attr="class","text-area"]After several months of traveling with the postal service, she'd come to understand that the general population absolutely loved Octavian. Nerina was very, very used to people approaching her horse, and even more used to people offering him treats and petting his nose. (After all, he was extremely handsome. They both knew that quite well.) She'd rather people ask, in general, but it didn't bother her too much. This, however, was a new one for her. [break][break]
"Uh, excuse me?" She blinked at the person who'd approached her horse with the apparent intent of started a conversation with him. Octavian continued munching on his apple, nonplussed. "That's — um, that's my horse? He can't talk, but I can," she offered, bewildered. "If you're willing to help, I'll certainly take it. I'm so over this problem, I'm ready to quit. I've got a package here with an indecipherable address. Want a look?" She offered the spectator the package while she looked them over. A... Sheikah?"And you're welcome to pet Octavian, if you'd like," she offered out of default politeness.

[attr="class","text-area"]She caught the honey gratefully, setting it next to the baking surface. She nodded as Ariadne spoke. "As good a reason as any to settle down somewhere. Although I guess it begs the question... why not just stay at home?" With a wry grin, she continued, "But I suppose I can't fault you for it. I've lived all over the place, and I gave it all up for this." She gestured to the satchel sitting next to her; with its prominent bunny logo, it was clear she worked for the post. "It's definitely worth the time. I get to travel pretty much wherever I want. And as an added bonus, I'm actually getting paid for it."[break][break]
She turned back to the fire, flipping the oatcakes so the other side would brown. She spread both with a generous amount of honey; then, using her sleeve to guard against the heat, she lifted the lid of the pot to stir the contents. A fantastic vegetable-broth smell wafted into the air, making Nerina's mouth water in spite of how many nights she'd eaten it. She watched it bubble for a moment, considering, then pulled out a cup from her bag. Dumping half into it, she offered the hot pot of vegetable soup to her visitor. "Dig in. It's dried stock and vegetables, but it's not bad. Oatcakes'll be finished soon." She blew on her soup to cool it down, swirling the cup before taking a sip. "I don't exactly carry flatware. Hope you brought a spoon."

[attr="class","text-area"]The wind ripped at her clothes, flooding her eyes with tears and making her shiver despite the season. Octavian was still steady, his feet taking them unerringly up the ridge, but she led him as close to the wall as possible. The post satchel he carried was fastened with extra rope to hopefully prevent any mishap. She struggled against the force of it as it tried alternately to slam her body into the mountainside and tear her off the edge. "This is... the worst... I almost miss... waitressing..." she grumbled under her breath. We just have to get around the bend. We just... need to get around to the leeward side and everything will be fine... She trekked on, grumbling something about how they didn't mention wind in the motto of the postal service.[break][break]
Nerina and her horse made their way around a bend in the cliff face, and suddenly, she felt a subtle vibration in the rock. She gave the lead rope a quick tug, pulling her horse to a sudden stop as she pressed herself against the wall. Her heart leapt into her throat. A rockslide? Wait... Any musician worth their salt would recognize a dance beat in seconds. Chest still pounding from the initial shock, she took a deep breath and continued her climb. Hylia's tits. That gave me a scare. She scowled for the final stretch.[break][break]
As she crested the last hill, she paused to take a breather. "These climbs... You better feel lucky I'm not making you carry me, too, Tavian!" she joked, trying to get her mind back. "Anyway, time to start..." She watched the impromptu celebration, leaning against her horse's shoulder. "Y'know what? They look like they could use accompaniment." Nerina reached into her bag and pulled out a well-loved reed pipe. She quickly hitched a patient Octavian to a post and waved to the drummers, gesturing to her instrument. As soon as she got permission to play, she laid into a fine, light melody; it flowed into the background of the joyful atmosphere.

[attr="class","text-area"] Luckily for Ariadne, Nerina had seen her down the path before she'd called out. She doesn't move like a fighter, that's for sure, and no bandit would travel so openly... alone. Taking a chance, she waved the traveler over. "Always room for another body — particularly if you brought something to add to this!" She gestured to two oatcakes gently steaming on a flat rock next to the campfire and a pot she'd set up in the coals. "No chance you have some honey, is there? Wouldn't go amiss." She settled her back against the rock wall, unobtrusively moving the fire between herself and the newcomer. "These should be done in a few minutes." She kept a close eye on the woman, waiting to see what she'd do next. Really can't be too careful, after all. Labrynnans are notorious criminals, aren't we, she joked to herself. But she has the wrong build. Unless she's... a magic user, actually... That gave her pause. She'd seen it in use, but never in a fight. Adopting the cautious route, she asked, "What brings you this far west, traveler?"

Her voice broke slightly, but she quickly covered it up. "You go ahead and do what you need to do. I'll finish up your chores today," she offered, staring into the distance. As Maude left, she waved, saying nothing; then, once she was out of sight, Nerina laid down on the grass, tears streaming from both eyes. She told me... first. My sister is getting married, married to Jon, and I'm the first person who knows about it. Unbidden, a laugh bubbled to her lips. She told me first! She told ME! First! I'm the first person in the whole world who knows Maude Lif is getting married! Maude, the drunk, abrasive foreman whose crew never thought she'd go on a date, let alone...
