They went through the very same conversations with Aren, and although her parents begged him not to... he still chose to go. And she knew that had she ever mentioned it to them, it would have been out of the question.
Breathing deeply through her nose, she straightened up a bit, taking a sip from her mead as she finished the cup, before pushing it toward the opposite edge of the counter, eying Ina to refill it. Crossing her arms, she thought long on it. Fighting monsters... giving up everything, just to follow that path. She knew what it meant, and she knew that she didn't belong here, shoveling shit and replacing fodder every day.
"Yes," she said seriously, her eyes fixing to his. "I know I don't look it, but I can fight. And I know magic..." she said rather lowly. Despite magic being such a beautiful thing, many found it taboo around here, as if it would only lead to trouble. "Light magic specifically, which proves to be quite useful against the blight."
She wasn't sure if he would protest, or if he would try to tell her it was a bad idea, but she knew it was better than being stuck here, wasting away her potential. "I've been trying to get out of this town for years, but never had the means to do so," she explained, looking back down at her plate of food. "When morning comes, can I go with you?"
Magic. He only knew of a few people that were capable of such a feat. The acolytes and court mages of the Seekers, and Lord Commander Alyra. He couldn’t deny that it was beyond useful to be able to perform magic, but it was not up to him to decide how well she would fare within the ranks of the seekers. Folt pursed his lips, his eyes looking other over strongly as he contemplated his options. There was one problem weighing on his mind. “Your father isn’t going to hunt you down for leaving will he? Cause I don’t want that trouble, Fighting monsters is one thing, citizens is another.” He finished the last of his stew. [break][break] “I am willing to take you along, but I am curious…” he started, blue hues resting on her face. “You said you didn’t have the means to leave…” he grimaced slightly. “It must be an incorrect statement…. If you REALLY wanted to leave, you would have done any means necessary. If you can fight and handle yourself against the blight, then why didn’t you just climb the mountainside yourself?… what doubt do you have? Because this is not a lifestyle for those that are not committed,” he explained, having similar discussions with every recruit he has ever trained thus far.

"Look, it took my brother leaving in the middle of the night for them to finally let him go without a fight. They refuse my right to leave at every turn, afraid of something happening to me... I know that it's dangerous out there. But it would be better for everyone if I asked for forgiveness rather than permission. I'm twenty... and they shelter me as if I'm some crowned jewel not meant for the world."
As the mead was filled into her cup once more, she snatched it, taking another sip. "For the longest time, it was because I was the only one helping my father with the stables. But they just hired two people to take it on in my absence--they can hire one more," she shook her head.
But perhaps for a long time, it was because she didn't know where she'd go. To another village to take on another mundane job? The Seekers seemed much more interesting... and more up her alley. Magic and saving people... "I also had no idea where to begin. I didn't want to get all the way there just to be turned away. If I show up with you... maybe it'll be more convincing," she smirked.
He listened to her excuses and determination. His lips still pressed into a fine line. He imagined how things may have been different in his life if he had been given the choice. If he had not been forced to become a Seeker. Would he have grown into his father's mercantile business? Aged and courted a woman similar to herself? Had children and built a legacy for them? It was all just a simple dream that he would never be able to achieve. Because being a Seeker was not a lifestyle, --it is a lifetime commitment... and the lifespan of Seekers is always short. [break][break] Several moments pass by and he lets out a heavy sigh, glancing in her direction and putting his hands up on the table. "Why do I suspect you already have a packed bag?" he mused, giving a half smile. She was right, they would have turned their nose up at her efforts if she arrived. Likely directed her towards cleaning or cooking in the kitchens. But if she wanted to fight monsters, then he would properly show her how.... after some strength training. [break][break] "You should day goodbye to them in some sort of fashion..." he said in a quieter voice, face growing solemn. If he had the chance, he would have so much to say to his family.
Lailah could see the hesitance written on his face, pressing her lips together anxiously as she waited for a response. He was right though--she had a small bag of belongings she knew she could take if she had to leave in a hurry. She kept her cerulean eyes fixed upon his own, until he finally spoke of saying goodbye, to which she nodded.
"Yes... I'll write a letter tonight, and leave it at their door in the morning. They have somewhere to be so I won't run into them by the time we make our exit," She explained. Turning back to her plate of food, she did her best to hide the excitement that was bubbling beneath the surface, taking another large bite into the pork before holding onto the flagon once more.
She knew her family wouldn't like it. And she knew that she might die. But she felt it would be better to die saving others than to die of disease or being unprepared for an attack. She heard how the other seekers talked. The hoards were getting larger. Stronger, even. She wouldn't sit around and wait for their walls to be breached and hide.
The young man was finding it hard not to grimace at the girl. He realized a long time ago about the privilege that was taken from him and how he would do anything to get in return. How could she forsake them like that? He wondered as he looked away from her, shuffling in his seat. A moment passed, and just as he felt the desire to step away from her for the night, she asked a question that left him feeling cold. [break][break] "...I didn't choose it," he said simply, his tone less than friendly, "I was taken and raised as one, by a Captain," he explained. In his mind he could picture the older man. Beard of grey and white. Large frame. Heavy voice. Folt had accompanied him for a majority of his missions until he was strong enough to take up his own sword.-- but his training wasn't enough to protect him.
Lailah furrowed her brows at his response, having heard stories of how kids were often taken to the keep. Poor families that couldn't take care of their own, overfilled orphanages... "I see," she said quietly. "I'm sorry..."
Perhaps he thought she was stupid for throwing a simple life away, but whether or not the snowy mountain was like a prison for him, this walled up city was the same to her. If it wasn't for her, she needed something different. Even if it killed her.
"I'm sure you think it foolish of me for wanting to go, but something tells me it's where I need to be. I keep having these dreams... and they all call me toward the mountain. Perhaps to meet someone, or to learn more about my magical capabilities."
Foolish indeed, but he wouldn't speak up about it. Instead, he only shrugged his shoulders, "I won't tell you right from wrong, that'll be your brothers doing," he said with a smirk, imagining that Aren would have some choice words about his sister's recruitment. Perhaps the girl would be Aren's new trainee and he could dust his hands of her. Not that she was a menace or anything, but something about her told him that she would be a problem in the future. [break][break] "Dreams though?... That sounds interesting. I wonder if it has anything to do with your affinity to magic..." he raised a brow before running a hand through his still slightly damp hair. He couldn't remember if the other Beckett had any such abilities, which was odd in itself because magic was an important factor within the Seeker's. [break][break] "Where did you learn?" he asked in reference to her Light Magic.
Lailah let out a sigh--she knew her brother would likely have some words for her. She knew it wouldn't really be possible to slip under the radar, but she prayed he was out on a mission by the time they arrived so she could deal with it later.
When Folt commented on the dream, she shrugged. "Perhaps... it was a woman bathed in light--I couldn't even see her face... she looked like a shadow within a sun. But she was beckoning me to go to Snowpeak to 'fulfill my duties'. Whatever that means..." she explained, taking a final bite into her pork as she cleaned her plate.
Pushing the plate forward, she took hold of the flagon in her hand and sipped at it for a moment before Folt asked about her magic. Thinking back on it... did she ever really learn. Giving a shrug, she shook her head. "I didn't. It just came to me when I was a child. It was something I could always do, but my parents begged me to keep it suppressed. I used to wander out of the city and practice in the woods, but they quickly learned what I was doing and forbid me from leaving again," she sighed.
"I don't really know why. Magic is a beautiful thing and so many people fear it," she scowled, hiding her lips behind the mug once more.
It was hard to hide his interest as she talked about her dreams. His brow raising slightly. He didn't think she was crazy, but it was still hard to believe that it could be real. As if something like destiny actually existed. If it did, he would have to admit that his parents HAD to die so that he could become a Seeker, perhaps even extending up to his meeting of Lailah. [break][break] "Magic is what brought the calamity upon us," he said. At least, that was his understanding of it. There had always been an unease about magic since he was a young boy. His natural curiosity about the subject was put down by his parents and again by his mentor. Yet in the hands of someone great like the Lord Commander, it was seen as a tool of necessity. [break][break] "We will see what the court mages think," he said in response, "And my advice for you when we get up to the temple....Don't hide anything. They will find out eventually."
The hylian nodded; it made sense for people to have reservations of about magic and its destruction it could cause. Letting out a sigh, she finished her mug and placed it back on the counter. "I have nothing to hide, so I'm not worried about it," she shrugged. Her eyes scanned the tavern, making note that the outdoors had become dark.
"Perhaps we should get some rest now," she thought of everything she'd need to take care of before their venture. A letter to write... what was worth taking with... taking a deep breath, she stepped off from the barstool and looked at Folt.
"I'm going to get some things ready. I'll see you in the morning."
If there was one thing, he was grateful to the young woman for help providing him with a warm bed and a hot meal. With a gracious smile he nodded at her as she excused herself from the bar. Following suit, Folt slid from the stool, adjusting his belt around his waist and accounting for every inch of himself and belongings. [break][break] "We leave at dawn, so be at the stables before first light," he said. The man had a feeling that Lailah would be there far earlier than that however. He would watch her leave, acknowledging the barmaid and the key she had slid him. Handing over the last of his rupees he sighed with relief as she took them without hesitation and question in the lack thereof. [break][break] It wouldn't take him long at all to pass out in the heavy feather bed mattress. [break][break]
