Dorian Vincanton
I like to discuss your philosophy. But more so, I like to discuss ye cash.
PERSONALITY
"Now, as much as I'd love to help this fine town out, I can't do it without supplies. And I can't have supplies if I can't buy it. And I won't help you until you have guaranteed me at least a slight portion of your rupees at this moment."
Dorian Vincanton is a rather controversial figure in the Ordana Province where he hails from. People there often think of him as a greedy "Greens First" extortionist thug. A notion Dorian is quick to dismiss, as he would reason that his small group of mercenaries, the Iron Ravens, have never forced anyone to pay them anything, nor ever been hostile to anyone in the Province.
While he is considered a manipulative and exploitative in how he will swoop in to tempt villagers and town mayors to pay him and his mercenaries from protection against bandits, or leave them to face another potential raid alone, Dorian will usually excuse this with mercenary work being an expensive line of work, not to mention a high-risk job. Dorian himself has however admitted that the favorite part of his job is seeing the rupees flow.
"What's a little mild greed when you're doing a good deed?"
- Dorian being self-aware.
Dorian has few friends in the Ordana Province, his circle of friends usually being limited to other mercenaries who understands the benefits and consequences of being one. That is not to say that he'll automatically respect other mercenaries, in particular not ones that are work almost more like bandits rather than mercenaries.
He is however not opposed to working alongside bandits if the price is good enough. However, he'd never do anything of the likes while he's in the Ordana Province. Partially because it's his home and partially because it would betray customer trust.
He is considered to be a calm and unusually relaxed figure, to the point of other peoples' annoyance, as it can be hard to tell whether or not he's taking things seriously. Some people suspect that he uses it to cover up inner demons, however, Dorian will shrug such comments off, annoyed with people romanticizing a version of him that doesn't exist beyond stereotypical book panels that will hopefully never exist.
Considering all of his less than honorable qualities, he's much to people's surprise a devout believer in the Goddesses, although he has his own idea of what the Goddesses are, how things came to be and what the Goddesses wants from the people of the world, to the point where religious organization has called his beliefs "heresy." He believes that above all else the Goddesses are good, and he doesn't need to have a thorough understanding of religious doctrines written down by mortal men with their own corrupt agendas in order to determine whether or not the Goddesses would approve. He's willing to trust his own conscience in such matters. He also distrusts Hylians, whom in his eyes constantly "blab on about their ears." In particular he dislikes them because of the religious centrism they put around their race, and often their Kingdom as a whole. He looks at it as a source of Hylian insecurity because they must convince themselves that they're superior.
This distrust of Hylians because of their supposed belief in their superiority as well as their centrism in believing themselves as the Goddesses' chosen also carries on to Dorian's opinion on the nobility of the land, in particular monarchs.
Many have accused Dorian of cowardice, as he and his Iron Ravens never seem to pick a fight that appears to not be in their favor whenever possible. Dorian considers this insulting, as he and his mentor Daric turned a village militia consisting of disorganized and untrained villagers from across the region into a proper military force capable of fighting local bandits, and that they regularly risk their lives as it is. In such discussions he'd usually encourage the critics to make their own swords and risk their own lives. He considers this so called "cowardice" to be more pragmatism than anything else, as the number of bandits in the region have grown to the point where the Iron Ravens can't fight all of them alone, much less survive as an organization if they can't pick their battles wisely. This shows that Dorian staunchly believes that retreat isn't the same as defeat, and laying down one's arms is not the same as giving up. He believes that in times like these, picking one's battles wisely is of utmost importance.
Dorian is a very prideful person who is easily caught up in his accomplishments, although he takes care not to brag too much and will more subtly talk about the things he's done, knowing that bragging is considered quite rude. He desires recognition for the things he has accomplished, and wants to further increase his fame through his mercenary work, as well as adventures, quests or actions that may not exactly have been a part of the plan. While he is good at not going overboard with his pride, he will take insults to his accomplishments very seriously. He can take a few insults, but it won't take long before he starts dragging on about the things he's done and why he deserves recognition for it, not necessarily directly saying that he deserves it, again because he doesn't want to appear too selfish.
He is very obsessed with keeping up appearances, and will adapt to other people relatively easily so long as the part he has to play is not too uncomfortable for him. Therefore, many tend to have different perceptions on what Dorian is like. Some will say he's intellectual and cultured, others will say he's more of a bar person. Ultimately, these fake personas tend to not last unless he's really committed to keeping up appearances within that group. His willingness to play someone else than himself is a result of his loneliness and him often being considered a controversial figure at home. He needs some form of companionship, and while he doesn't admit it, he feels lonely and will go as far as not being himself to be accepted within a group of people.
Around the people who are familiar with him, Daric and the Iron Ravens, he often finds himself trapped in Daric's shadow, as Daric remains a respected martyr figure who did everything he could to protect the locals, while Dorian is seen as a failure unable to protect the people of Ordana with his mercenaries, primarily using them as a source of profit instead. This has also alienated him from the people in his home area, and he prefers not to talk about it with them.

HISTORY
Childhood
Dorian Vincanton was born in a small village named Byrin in the Ordana Province two miles away from Ordon Village. His father was a local fisherman who caught and sold fish to the village folk, and supplied caravans that traveled with his fish among many other interesting resources throughout the local region. His mother was and remains a farm owner of the only farm in Byrin, and she employs most of the locals in the village as well.
As the family's only child, Dorian was to become the new owner of the farm due to the inevitability of his mother's eventual death, and was as such regularly tutored in economics, crops and farming as a whole. However, he always showed displeasure at having a life he wasn't particularly interested in to be forced upon him. Instead, he preferred being with a local swordsman named Daric whom he idolized at the time. Given that nobody else in the village knew how to use a sword, or fight at all for that matter, other swordsmen were a rare sight beyond the occasional hired sword that went with a caravan.
From a young age, Dorian had befriended Daric the swordsman, and Daric occasionally trained young Dorian in how to use a sword, much to his parents' displeasure. However they didn't stop him, conceding that two swordsmen are better than one, and Dorian is the only one seemingly actually committed to learning. Dorian's bond to Daric was similar to that to that of two brothers, even if the difference in age was very hard to ignore.
Aside from spending time with Daric and being prepared for farm work, Dorian would often leave the village boundaries to explore the forest, which was both dangerous and foolhardy due to the wildlife and lawlessness in the forest. But Dorian did get a very good understanding of the surrounding region and the lay of the land, and he knew of many shortcuts and and nice places to see. Eventually some of the villagers helped Dorian's parents with looking after Dorian and making sure he didn't go too far. But it didn't stop Dorian from finding other ways of leaving the village, much to the displeasure of his fellow villagers.
Teenage Years
At the age of sixteen, Dorian had been granted an iron sword crafted by Daric himself. Daric was by no means a smith, so the sword was highly flawed, especially in comparison to his own sword, but it was functional and deadly nonetheless. Daric would from this point on train regularly alongside Daric, and his parents found that he was no longer studying crops at all, but surprisingly maintained interests in number crunching. They decided that he was a lost cause and found another local to inherit he farm instead, while Dorian was allowed to do as he pleased by his parents.
Dorian's commitment to swordsmanship payed off when he was seventeen years old, when a local gang of bandits consisting of both Moblins and Bokoblins threatened to kill everyone in the village by the month's end unless they gave all of the month's gains to them and half of all the gains every month after that month. Daric and Dorian both insisted on resisting and gathered a peasant militia of 12 people whom they trained throughout the entire month. Dorian's parents had also volunteered to join.
By the month's end, the Moblin messenger had its head chopped off, and not long after, the rest of the gang attacked the village. The gang was successfully defeated after a short skirmish, and the militia had only lost three men fighting them off. However, Dorian's father was among the three that perished. Dorian, regretting that he had not known his father well and often not spent time with him, assuming that there would always be a "tomorrow" with him, fell into a deep depression. He vowed to spend more time with his mother and drop swordsmanship forever. His mother disapproved of this, declaring to him that he had helped organize and save the village from becoming the vassals of bandits, and she demanded that he pursue his dreams and benefit from something he was proficient at, rather than dooming himself to a life he didn't want.
He eventually pulled himself together the next year, thanked his mother for her time and support, as he quickly proceeded to formulate a plan with Daric who was starting to visibly age. A plan to fight off local bandits, for a price. Daric and Dorian formed a small mercenary company consisting of a few of those who had willingly joined the village militia the former year. They called themselves the "Iron Ravens", symbolic of the ravens in their general area and their ability to be everywhere at once. This was Daric and Dorian's promise, to aid where aid is needed, and be able to always be there when needed.
Adulthood
For the next few years, the mercenary company grew in size and money under Daric's esteemed leadership and became highly respected by the locals. Dorian functioned as second in command, and while respected, was still controversial due to his evidently more ruthless and money-making approach to the mercenary operation. The Iron Ravens would be especially active after the Golden Goddesses saw it fit to reward Hyrule with their wrath due to the failure of Hyrule's guardians. Chaos was upon the realm and banditry in the local region reached heights never before seen. Eventually, the Iron Ravens lost people faster than they could replace them. As their numbers dwindled, so did their confidence along with the people willing to hire them.
When Dorian was twenty five years old, Daric had been slain in battle with local bandits and Dorian had been elected to take over the Iron Ravens. Mourning his lost friend, Dorian was nevertheless happy that he spent time with him and enjoyed every moment they could find together, instead of making the same mistake he made with his father. However he had discovered a fatal flaw with Daric's management in the new times that had descended upon Hyrule. While the banditry was kept in check, it was possible to cover a huge area. But with this newfound chaos and the mass of people turning to crime to get by, it was simply impossible to cover too much ground. Dorian decided to end the Iron Raven idealism at once, as he found it toxic and suicidal, and ultimately would not achieve anything but kill everyone capable of fighting off the bandits.
He turned the Iron Ravens into a purely profit based mercenary company that would only pick fights they knew they could win. He did this, because he believed that it was better that they fight off some bandits and win, than picking a fight with all bandits and lose. He never looked back with regret. His leadership would turn the Mercenary Company into a gang with infamy surrounding its name. Although he considers the infamy the be unreasonable, and the demands of the locals suicidal and the very reason that Daric died to begin with, he nevertheless conceded that he isn't as virtuous as Daric was and often ended up questioning his own leadership. Over the the years, he eventually became increasingly confident that he was in the right, and also secured an iron grip over the company as time went on. Despite disliking the act of taking risks, he sometimes did lead the Iron Ravens to more unbalanced fights against bandits, usually in the form of ambushes to gain the initial upper hand, although he preferred to avoid such encounters whenever possible.
Present
Dorian has recently stopped actively leading the Iron Ravens and has given a lot of the duties to his second in command, a woman by the name of Delilah. Instead, whenever he has an opportunity to, he goes out on his own in the surrounding region, finding people who requires help rather than communities as a whole. He'll help for a good pouch, or sometimes for free if he's feeling generous. Rumors among the Iron Ravens has it that he's striking out on his own to find a way to defeat the bandits once and for all, possibly with outside help. Many are quick to doubt these rumors, as Dorian "doesn't seem like the type." A lot of the Iron Ravens consider Dorian to be leader only in name by now, while Delilah is the true head of the spear. But Delilah herself is very quick to shut these topics down, she herself being particularly loyal to Dorian as he had both trained her and helped her out of a position of poverty, in addition to giving her plenty of power within the ranks of the Iron Ravens. Power she would not have found if it wasn't for him.
While he acts more independently and separately from his company at this point in time, he takes care not to reveal himself as Dorian, and will usually go by aliases. This is because some bandits have a price on his head, and other locals will just start criticizing him non-stop. When outside of Ordana he will however be far more open about his identity.

APPEARANCE
Dorian has a somewhat wide head with slightly stronger than average cheekbones, a strong relatively thick nose, thinner than average lips and a wide jaw. His hair is fairly long and dark brown, and his thick beard makes his face seem longer and wider than it actually is. His ears are like that of humans, round, and his green eyes are a little further up than the average person, supported by rather thick eyebrows that are brimming with authority. His skin is slightly paler than average, and his body is decently built. He is about average in length and slightly thinner than most people. However, him being just slightly thinner has made an illusion of him being slightly taller than he actually is. His face and body alike has a few scars on them, but none of them are too bad. The most visible one is on his nose, horizontally going from the leftmost side of it to the rightmost side in a upside down V shape.
MAGIC
Interestingly, Dorian is not attuned to magic at all. However, he has access to magical abilities. Something that's more of anomaly, even among humans whom are not particularly attuned to magic to begin with. Instead, he offers prayers to the Goddesses, prayers that may or may not be heard. It is more accurate that he calls upon the magical winds around him for aid, rather than actually using it. It is not currently known why Dorian can't generate his own magic.
MAGIC TYPE: Prayer
NAME: Goddesses' Protection
RANK: Common
DURATION/COOLDOWN: Can only be used once per confrontation.
This prayer lasts for ten seconds.
DESCRIPTION: Dorian prays for the Goddesses to grant him protection in his hour of need, so that he may fight for those final vital seconds before his body fails him. In essence, Dorian buys more time, where an ordinary person would collapse from wounds or exhaustion, Dorian can stand and fight for ten more seconds.

WEAPONS
RANK: Common
TYPE: Longsword
HANDLING: One handed / Two handed
DESCRIPTION: Dorian's steel longsword consists of a 18 centimeter grip and a 106 centimeters long blade length. The crossguard is 9 centimeters wide and the weapon itself is made of local Ordana steel. The grip is covered by leather with designated points customized with finger comfort in mind. It is light enough for Dorian to use coupled with a shield, something he'd rather do in a shieldwall alongside his mercenaries or other adventurers favoring shields, but he's at his best in terms of both agility and power when he's working without a shield.
RANK: Common
TYPE: Round shield
HANDLING: Strapped to the arm
DESCRIPTION: Dorian generally doesn't use his shield aside from when in a shield wall formation. He's quick to discard his shield in combat in favor of a two-handed approach. The shield itself is 100 centimeters in total and made of wood with leather added on top for extra support and protection before the final impact. Since Dorian can easily hold on to a shieldwall without a strong strap, it is designed so that Dorian can be able to quickly toss it away without spending valuable time taking the shield off, as he doesn't want to use it outside of a shieldwall to begin with. If he were to use it outside of a shieldwall, it would certainly provide major protection, but due to the weak strap it could just as easily fall off or worse yet, be used it against him.
