IT'S TIME TO PROVE MYSELF!
A FLYER FLAPS IN THE WIND...
"... a postman, huh?" the woman mused, pinning the paper against the board. Her companion munched his meal next to her, punctuating her thoughts with soft crunching noises. "I mean, I know Maude wants me to stick around the property, but... I miss it, Tavian. I miss being out in the open all the time, without roofs, and stairs, and weird creaky floors that make a bunch of noise when you try to get a glass of water at three in the morning..." Letting her thought trail off, she sighed, bending in and adjusting her glasses to read the fine print about salary. "Huh. The pay isn't bad at all. And... I mean, if I did this, you'd maybe lose that hay belly, right?" Nerina grinned at her horse, who huffed, unamused. "Oh, you know it's not bad. You just got a little... a little..." She made a vague gesture at him. He flicked an ear. "I promise it doesn't take away from how handsome you are. Anyway, I think I'm gonna..." She paused. What was she going to do? "I think I'm going to walk in there and ask for a job," she said slowly. "You just stay right here, bud, and... I'll be back in a moment!" Taking a breath, she checked the knot on Octavian's reins to ensure he wouldn't stray into the flowers and squared her shoulders. Yeah. I'll just walk in there, do... things... and walk back out...
Cross-indexing every weatherman's report. Originally a citizen of Labrynna, Nerina lived on her family's pumpkin farm. They never took to her love of the arts, and she never took to their strict, rules-oriented parenting style. At the age of 14, she packed up her posessions, whistled for her dog, and left. She traveled the continent, meeting and missing many friends along the way: Ryne, Darcel, Leona, Larisa, Sinnie, Nolana, Lemminkainen, Emmerich... There are many names engraved on her heart, but none more deeply than her mentor, Harper Ceridwen. Harper taught the young musician the ways of travel and improvisation before disappearing as whirlwind-quick as he appeared. Despite the losses, Nerina never regretted her traveling period... for the most part.
I was ready for the downslide... She ran afoul of a small town on her journey. There was... a fire, and since she was in the barn where it started, she was accused. The trial was rigged; the jury were locals, unfriendly to outsiders, and she landed in jail. Her treatment was rough. The sentence was long. It's an experience she wishes she'd never had, but she knows she cannot change the past.
... but not for spring to well up. After jail, she drifted for a while. She spent a brief honeymoon period with Nero Antony. He was immensely helpful in getting her back on her feet. Nerina will always miss him; her heart knows that her curtain call wasn't meant to happen yet, and it wasn't meant to happen with him. During that happy time, she also managed to reunite with her estranged sister, Maude. Her farm became a haven for Nerina after she left Nero, and she spent a good deal of time just... working. The activity did wonders for her anxiety and self-worth, and recently, she's even applied for a job: mailman. (She'll break it to Maude slowly.)
STAFF: Not, like... a cool staff. This is actually just a decently sized hickory branch she picked up while working on the farm near the wind break — about five and a half feet long, almost a head taller than she is. Nerina has done her best to keep it in good condition, and she's confident that if she's backed into a corner, she could use it to defend herself. [break][break]
OCTAVIAN: Octavian, alias Big O, alias Tavian, is Nerina's riding horse and beloved companion. He is... large. Large, definitely, is the first word in anyone's mind on seeing him, and it's no wonder he was originally purchased as a plow horse for the farm. But the heart wants what it wants, and Nerina and Tavian were destined for each other from the start. He's about seventeen hands, a big-boned chestnut warmblood with a fondness for carrots and not going much faster than a placid walk. (He also hated the plow.) They've been together for about four months now, and they're damn near inseparable. [break][break]
OTHER: Nerina's pockets tend to be pretty full — she's picked up a bit of a hoarding habit. She has a pretty dull whittling knife for idle projects, a snack bag full of trail mix just in case, a small notebook for writing down ideas, names, to-do lists, and anything else that comes to mind, and usually a pick for the guitar she generally leaves at home. She also carries a reed pipe on longer journeys, since music does every soul a world of good.
