I've got the key to my castle in the air, whether I can unlock the door remains to be seen.
The news was more dire than Riza had anticipated. The Twili had not anticipated the Lord Commander to bring news as positive as hers was, but had not expected things quite this bleak. She took the chance to scan over the reports when presented with the opportunity. It was a small comfort that consolidating workload at Snowpeak would allow for more people in the field, possibly balancing this somewhat.
It was the last part of what the Lord Commander said that rang a distant bell in Riza's memory. The mage looked up at Alyra before her eyes darted around a bit, her brow furrowing as she tried to remember, tried to search through ancient memories to find why that seemed so familiar. “Contain them… hm.”
What was it, what was it?
And then, her eyes lit up. “Oh! Lord Commander, I don't know how familiar you are with the story of how my people first came into contact with Hyrule. Not long before I was born, a traitor overthrew-” her voice caught for a moment, before she cleared her throat, “deposed our princess, Midna. The usurper, Zant, staged an invasion of the Light World by partitioning off the provinces into containment zones with twilight magic. He did this so that Castle Town could not receive reinforcements when he walked his army in. This containment locked the people of Hyrule into a dreamlike state, huddling in their homes waiting for the nightmare to end. If they reached the walls of those containment zones…”
She flipped through her notes, to the earlier, slightly-yellowed pages of ideas long past. The pages contained sketches of twilight portals, the Mirror of Twilight, and the disfigured beasts Zant made from his followers. “Some time ago, I began an attempt to reverse-engineer that magic to harness it for our cause, but then the Calamity changed everyone's priorities. While we wouldn't be able to- nor would we particularly want to- lock down the entirety of Hyrule, I believe that, with enough time and study, my mages could create some small, ideally-impenetrable shadow cages. We might even be able to warp enemies to those containment spaces.”
Ah! Settling on one particular page, Riza turned her notebook around and placed it on the table in front of the Lord Commander. On the page, a much younger Riza had sketched Hyrule Castle in a prismatic pyramid, and underneath that had written some basic formulae for how one might begin to create a twilight containment zone without stealing the source of the light spirits “Zant had a dark god for a patron, which we don't have. But he created a special containment zone for Hyrule Castle that I believe could be replicated. At your word, we could begin research on it… though I might need to travel to gather more information.”
Rizali stepped silently into the Lord Commander's offices. Her eyes met the desk first, memories of the previous meetings gliding through her mind. She then looked up and met the eyes of Alyra. She'd always found it interesting how different this chamber felt from the rest of the fortress. It seemed the exhaustion of overwork had settled permanently into the stones of Snowpeak, but here it contained an extra air of stoic weathering, as if those who occupied this room were meant to outlast even the stones surrounding them. She had little doubt they could.
Taking her place standing across the desk from the Lord Commander, Riza gave a slight smile and nodded her head. “Good morning, Lord Commander. You're looking well, today.”
Her footsteps through the cold Snowpeak halls were silent. She never had trouble hearing the other Seekers as they clanked around the fortress in their metal armour. Even the lighter-adorned tapped or thudded across the floors. But, strangely, the Twili hardly seemed to register to the light world. Rizali's footsteps had always been silent. She didn't have any interest in negating that advantage, wearing cloth magical robes and the slightest flats she could manage.
The heavy wooden doors at the end of this particular hallway led to the offices of the Lord Commander. Riza was arriving four or five minutes early for their meeting, her standard arrival time to this sort of event. The Commander's guards knew her face- their grandparents had known her face- and gave a warm greeting. She responded in kind, asking the sorts of questions one might be expected to ask in this sort of situation, checking in on families and their comfort, was there anything she could do to help them. It had become a numb routine over the centuries, but she did her best not to fall into a desperate boredom, to remain as present in those moments as possible. She eventually asked if the Lord Commander was ready for their meeting yet, and the younger Hylian entered the door to check for her.
Though unsure of what exactly might happen in this meeting- she was never entirely sure what would happen with Alyra- this wasn't the type of meeting where anything untoward or unexpected should happen. Rizali met with the Lord Commander on a monthly basis to discuss the ongoing magical protection of the fortress, the training of its mages, and to receive instruction on any special projects expected of her. Though they met more often than that, having a dedicated meeting time helped to maintain a routine and ensure that everyone in the fortress kept moving on a proper schedule. And, to Riza's satisfaction, the previous month had progressed without much issue at all.
Rizali opened a notebook and scribbled down a few more notes. If she was successful at this task, the compound could be entirely monitored with half the amount of Seekers on patrol. That would mean more free time for the men, women, and individuals of the Snowpeak regiment to relax, read, write to their families, or do whatever it was they wanted. Increasing morale would hopefully- did she count that right?
If the Seekers at the Snowpeak fort were in better spirits, it would inevitably lead to an increase in performance. Nobody was here by force- every Seeker knew what they had signed up for and what they were trying to protect. Behind deaths in the field- something she could only do so much about, at least for now- morale was the biggest obstacle to their productivity and inevitable victory over the increasing number of monsters in Hyrule. And, while she wasn't training new mages or attending to the Lord Commander, this was the best way for Rizali to spend her time. She closed her eyes and placed a hand on one of the polished gemstones she had arranged on the desk. Yes… okay, good. She could feel the network of magic she'd spent the last year crafting coming to fruition. The southwestern battlements came to her mind- not an image, but she could sense the presences there. One of the recruits shivering as he stood on the wall, his patrol partner warming inside the nearby tower before they would switch out. Good.
She opened her eyes and counted one more time. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Right, she was confident this time. Things seemed to align. She wrote a few more notes in her notebook, making sure every step of the process had been documented for the past year, then closed it and placed the notebook on the top shelf of her bookcase, along with the instructions and documentation for every other spell she'd placed in the central Seeker compound.
The calendar on her desk said her next appointment was in 20 minutes, she was scheduled to meet with the Lord Commander and update her on how things were going. She liked Alyra, who reminded her of herself from 600 years before. She had also been difficult to get along with, and the people around her felt she wasn't deserving of the place she had gotten. Most people still felt that way about her, even though it was harder to argue entitlement against someone who had been alive for centuries. But Rizali had watched the Seekers for a long time now, and been part of it for most of that. She knew what was at stake, and she had a feeling for what sort of legacy was being placed on Alyra. They all had their part to play, and it was all she could do to make things a little easier on the Lord Commander.
Once upon a time, there was a young Twili named Rizali. Her parents were first-generation Twili nobility, having spent over 200 years in various fields until they finally made the right decisions and were allowed into the court. As such, Riza was the first of her bloodline to be tutored in the "proper" way, according to the court attitudes. Her childhood took place in a strange liminal space, where the lower class children didn't want to spend time with her due to perceived differences, and the other noble families still saw hers as nouveau-riche pretenders who weren't worthy of their time. As such, she spent more time inside studying and playing games and creating stories on her own than she did with others her own age. She was highly proficient at magic, extremely curious and creative in the ways she cast her spells, and also excelled at history, finding the various stories as potent fuel for her own creations. She was a cheeky child, with a sharp wit and a way of finding trouble, though it was always more well-meaning chaos than malicious. [break][break] Riza entered the Twilight Court after she completed her studies at about 100 years old. From the start, she knew her ultimate goal: an apprenticeship with the elder Court Mage, in hopes of learning even more about magic than she already did. The Court Mage was known to be the greatest mage in all of the Twilight Realm, on the cutting edge of magic development. And, though she developed a rivalry along the way with a young alchemist of much higher noble station, Riza was able to realise her dream. She began working with the kind, elderly man on his various ambitions, and was also able to gain access to the Twilight Princess herself, Midna. Rizali and Midna formed an almost sisterly relationship, the royal taking pity on the younger outsider and giving her tips on how to appear at ease in most situations. [break][break] Everything seemed to be going so well… until the cult of Zant began rising once more, this time without its former master. It began with rumours, then assassinations, then a constant anxiety that pushed the court further and further inside, until finally the would-be usurper revealed himself to be Zala'Vas, a noble who had been driven to madness and obsession by Zant's coup centuries earlier. Zala'Vas caused Midna to flee from the Twilight and installed himself as a tyrant, imprisoning and monitoring those nobles who would work for him, and executing those who had shown loyalty to the Twilight Princess. Upon having the previous Court Mage killed, the new King of Twilight appointed the alchemist, who had expressed loyalty to his cause, to the position. Rizali understood this meant her own death was near, and spent all her favours and wealth within the court to flee to the Light Realm, eventually finding her way back into Midna's service. From their sun-stained base of operations, the growing Twili resistance planned their counter-revolution. [break][break] But it was not to be. The local politics of Hyrule and the supernatural elements of the dimension they now found themselves in became more pressing. The Calamity, as it was called locally, led to a staggering loss of life and the ultimate sealing off of Hyrule from those other lands outside of its borders. Things became hazy. The next decades, centuries even, passed in a blur, a mess of watching the denizens of Hyrule grow into adulthood and eventually die of old age, if not sooner, as Riza struggled with the knowledge that attachments made would inevitably lead to loss with these short-lived races. Plans needed to be made on a much shorter scale than to which she had been accustomed. Eventually, she moved to Snowpeak, where a fledgling organisation called the Shadow Seekers was fighting off the monsters of this new, post-Calamitous Hyrule. And she found herself to be in a unique position to share the secrets of magic she had learned over her half a millennium of life. She was granted the role of Master Court Mage- the bitter irony of this life-spanning bookend was not lost on her- and quickly took to her new work. She had become highly proficient in defencive magic in the time after the Calamity, learning to weave shields, wards, anti-scrying nets, even the ability to monitor areas within a distance of her location, and used it to protect not only the Lord Commander, but as many of her fellow Seekers as possible.

Wrought, gold-plated metal winds around the length of the wand, clasping the stone at each end just below the crystal setting. When she is using the wand as a focus for her magical abilities, the crystal at the top will emit a faint glow.
